Why does God only forgive after we repent ? Why if we are asked to forgive regardless of whether or not the offending person asks for our forgiveness and repents?

God forgives us all the time. But without repentance, forgiveness isn’t worth anything to us. If we do not repent, we are still sinners.

Isa.29: 16 ” You turn things upside down! Shall the potter be regarded as the clay; that the thing made should say of its maker, “He did not make me”; or the thing formed say of him who formed it, “He has no understanding”?

**Isa.64: 8 **“Yet, O LORD, thou art our Father; we are the clay, and thou art our potter; we are all the work of thy hand.”

Because without repentance there can’t possibly be true forgiveness.

“Forgiveness” both of self and of others is FIRST about ourselves; our souls; our charity; our obedience. Then and only then can and does it pass on to others.🙂

The issue here is twofold IMO

Charity and humility

“Do onto others AS you would have [like] them do onto you”

John.13: 35 “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

God is Good and desires that WE TOO be good.

Grace builds on nature, and doesn’t supplant it.

If, in our own nature, we do not ask for forgiveness, then it will not be forced upon us.

But Christ has already died and risen for the sins of you, me and everybody else.

So my friend;🙂

What exactly does “Christ already died for our sins mean?”🤷

What then are the consequences of sin? Or can’t we sin anymore?🤷

Does this mean ALL sins are forgiven?🤷

Because Christ died once and for all time for the salvation of all.

Because Christ is “out of time” (not that the clock has run out, but that he is outside of our linear time frame) he died for your sins in the past, and your sins that you have not yet committed (mine too obviously).

Imagine sin = car being impounded. Christ has paid the fine - we have to go to the impound lot to pick up the vehicle.

Are you saying you believe in salvation assurance?

Are you saying I’m saying I believe in salvation assurance?
Well your comment sure sounds like you are saying that Christ died for our past, present and future sins.
Christ died to redeem us and give us the opportunity to be saved but our salvation depends on the choices we make. If we make the wrong ones and die in a state of mortal sin then we go to Hell.

This:

does not conflict with this:
Christ died to redeem us and give us the opportunity to be saved but our salvation depends on the choices we make. If we make the wrong ones and die in a state of mortal sin then we go to Hell.
Both are true. I don’t see the conundrum.

How many times did Christ die?
When did Christ die?
How many sins did you commit when Christ died?
Do you think it’s possible that you may sin in the future?

If Christ hadn’t already died for those future sins how could you get forgiveness for them?

So, has Christ died for our past, present and future sins or not?

That’s probably one of the most concise and effective presentations of this argument that I have ever seen. I hope you don’t mind if I use this in the future!

No of course not, you’re welcome. Thanks for the compliment.

Christ did not save us by his death on the cross. He redeemed us and gave us the chance to be saved. Whether our sins are forgiven is up to the choices we make. If we sin and do not repent and confess then our sin is not forgiven.
The way you word it looks like any sin we commit is automatically forgiven whether we repent or not which of course is not the case.

We are commanded to love one another- to do good to those who persecute us. Our attempts to follow this command does not compare with the love that God has for each one of us. If we do not make an attempt to follow this command, no matter how difficult it may be, our fallen human nature will lead us to sin- hatred, revenge etc. Whereas God always loves the sinner and waits for his return, giving us every opportunity to repent as long as we are on this earth. But God is also just. He alone is our judge.

Yes.
God’s mercy is always available, because His mercy is the absolute nature of God. It’s permanent in and of itself. Always there. But for God’s mercy to be activated requires a response on our part. We have a relationship with God, actively, dynamically. His mercy is not mechanical and irrelevant to our sorrow for our sins. It is an anxious, eager mercy awaiting our slightest impulse toward Him and dependent on us to acknowledge our neediness and our wish for His mercy. We can’t have a wish for mercy if we do not acknowledge that we need that mercy for our sins. There’s nothing static or automatic about mercy. Universally available. Particularly relational.

So indeed we have to “do” something to receive God’s mercy; just because His mercy is absolute does not mean that it is automatic. Big difference.

When you redeem a coupon do you save money?

Christ died and rose once and for all time for all sins. He doesn’t have to die again for each sin, right?

We each have to confess our sins, however, and, in the person of Christ, the priest gives us absolution.

All is there already, prepared, for our forgiveness, in the death and resurrection of Christ, except for our contrition and confession, and the absolution given by the priest.

I’m not sure we are saying different things at all.

Have you ever been to an impound lot to pick up a vehicle? It’s a bit like going to purgatory;)

=triumphguy;10149398]Because Christ died once and for all time for the salvation of all.[NO my friend. That is not the truth and the teaching of the CC.
In Dying Christ REDEEMED ALL; but that is not the ame as causes or granting salvation to “ALL” as you seem to suggest. Where what you shared God’s Will, Desire and fact; there would be no reason at all for the Sacraments; the Church or the Bible.

YES BUT! That does means they are automatically forgiven; ONLY that they May and CAN be…Please look up these passages:
1st John 1:8-10
1st.John5: 16-17
Mt.16:18-20
John 20:19-23
Here’s a easy way for you to do so:Bible: Revised Standard Version
Imagine sin = car being impounded. Christ has paid the fine - we have to go to the impound lot to pick up the vehicle.
If I THOUGHT by this meant; you were speaking the Sacrament of Confession; I’d agree. But I don’t think that is what your saying:shrug: 🙂

Do you and your soul a favor and look up tha passages I offered.

God Bless,

In a sense God has already forgiven all our sins–but it does us no good unless we repent and turn to God.

It’s like Prodigal Son. His father had already forgiven him even when he was sleeping with the pigs. The father was scanning the horizon all this time waiting his son to come back. We know this because he saw him from afar and ran out to meet him. It wasn’t until the son decided to repent and return was he able to avail himself of his father’s forgiveness.
