It begins with Jasiek, my first boyfriend. His friend Lukasz and others were always around. The first time Lukasz talked to me I noticed he seemed friendly and easygoing. I was out of town for 2 months. When I came back I didn’t remember Lukasz’s name but I was VERY happy to see him, I hugged him and asked him what his name was. Then I ran into him on Uxbridge Road and we had a short conversation where I was asking him about where someone was and then another time I sat near him and had a brief conversation with him when we were eating. One day I ran into him when I got off the bus. He asked me where I was going. Then he zipped up my sweater and all of a sudden I realised that I had feelings for him.

The next time that I saw Lukasz, we had dinner and then he, our friends Pawel, Bartek’s brother who refused to ever tell his name, and I were sitting in a park area. I put my hand on Lukasz’s leg and he ignored me. I put my head on his shoulder and he ignored me. I almost walked away. Then I told Lukasz, my hands are cold, so he put my hands in my sleeves. Then I said, but your hands are warm, so he put his hands on top of mine stiffly. I put my fingers through his but it was clearly just platonic. Then I took his arm and put it around me and he finally got the message.

The next time that I saw him, Lukasz, Pawel, and another guy who was also named Pawel, and I walked to a Christmas activity together. I held Lukasz’s hand and he was okay with it. Later on while we were in there we ate something and then sat together, then Lukasz asked when I wanted to meet again. Then he volunteered to walk me home which really shocked me because if I had asked my ex boyfriend Jasiek to do such a thing he would have told me off.

When Lukasz and I were first in a relationship I did not want to set times to meet with him because I was afraid he wouldn’t show up and I thought he was probably busy with his friends. However, he went out of the way to show up where he knew I would be in order to see me so I started trusting him. The icing on the cake was when one day I was sick and he went with me to the hospital. Wow. That was when my feelings for him turned from like into love. When I first met Lukasz I thought he was incredibly ugly and when we started dating I never looked at his face because I was afraid I would stop liking him as much. The few times I accidentally saw it, yes I was disgusted to be honest. However, after my feelings turned into love, I could look at Lukasz straight in the face and he honestly appeared to be the most handsome guy I had ever seen.

The first time that Lukasz told me he loved me actually was when I had tonsillitis and couldn’t talk. I wrote him on a shoebox, “Lukasz, do you love me? It’s fine if you don’t, I’m just asking” and he wrote “So much! I missed you, really!” Something that really shocked me was that one day I told Lukasz, I don’t want to sleep with you until marriage and his response was “no problem.” That really shocked me big time because all the experiences I had ever had before people pressured me to sleep with them immediately which I did, and based on what I had heard, most guys wouldn’t be good with waiting until marriage. I ended up changing my mind but I felt like Lukasz respected me big time.

One day I saw Lukasz looking at a picture of a woman in lingerie. That was when I realised that he was attracted to other women. Now I had definitely heard people mentioning this phenomenon before but in my mind I wrote it off as a joke or an exaggeration because personally it’s incomprehensible to me that you would have feelings for one person but get any sort of enjoyment out of looking at another person’s body. Even when I was in high school and a girl with a boyfriend said she’d hypothetically like to kiss a celebrity, I felt weird…how could you possibly be attracted to someone else if you had feelings for one person already? And a male friend of mine told me that once he had a chance to sleep with someone other than his wife and he said no but it was really really difficult. I didn’t get that either. I mean, how could you even find the idea of sleeping with someone besides your partner appealing??? The way that I have always been, is even if I am watching a movie and I see 2 good looking guys in there, my mind immediately chooses one to feel those feelings of attraction to because I simply cannot be attracted to 2 people simultaneously on any level. After this happened with Lukasz, I went from being a US size 6 for 7 years to a US size 0 within 2 weeks. Sometimes when I think about this topic I feel like am I being punked? because my mind still cannot grasp the idea that someone loves someone, but yet enjoys looking at other women’s breasts??

Since then after talking to trusted male and female friends I realised that all men (and some women as well) are attracted to people other than their partners. That’s why I cannot have a relationship of bf and gf, anything more than friends with benefits, because I cannot stand this phenomenon. Sure, being in a relationship in general is a good thing, but in my case the cons outweigh the pros. Here is some stuff that people have said to me about this topic:
  1. People in a relationship aren’t blind. I know they’re not. But there is a difference between thinking someone is good looking and being attracted to them. I’m straight but I think plenty of girls are good looking.
  2. It’s just like flowers. You don’t have to like one. Well yes but you can also have 2 flowers at once but not 2 women so I guess the analogy doesn’t work 🙂
  3. He’s looking at the menu but chose you. I’m still not good with it. It’s like I feel like sex and whatever is between the two of us, and if you quite like it when you see a woman in a low-cut top’s cleavage, that’s like whoaaa I thought that was between US.

I can tell I am a lot older than you. I have heard people say they don’t want a “relationship” and watched how they behaved. And this includes an ex-boyfriend of three years. People who say that, forgive me, are selfish and unrealistic.

It is completely fooling yourself to believe that you can be with someone of the opposite sex and be friends, friends with benefits, etc. and think that is NOT a relationship. It is a relationship. You are in a relationship when you interact with someone regularly in a continous pattern. What you create is a relationship that is defined in such a way that you think will protect you, but does not. Because you start off cheating yourself and cheating that other person, by making your interactions self centered and self serving. And it is a realtionship that is fated to have problems when one person starts to care more or even just want more attention than the other. And that one person could be you or could be the other person. Someone is always watching for this “friendship” to start to become more and then warning the other person about the rules, that it is “not a relationship”.

And tell me, if you have a relationship with a guy that is “friends with benefits”, but you don’t call yourself “girlfriend”, what name can you think of that truely fits this situation? Do you want a man to think of you with that name?

The definition of single is not married. If you are staying single, that means you are not going to marry. If you don’t want to be part of a couple, then fly solo. But you will only fool yourself by thinking you will be safe from having your feelings hurt if you pretend you are not in a relationship when you enter into one where one or both of you use each other for selfish reasons.

Carol, I mean I don’t want to have a romantic relationship, but I do have male platonic friends. I’m not interested in having a friend with benefits; I just wrote that in order to illustrate that I can’t have something that’s a romantic relationship where the 2 people are in love etc.

I’m sorry I misunderstood. It was a lot to take in and I must have focused on the wrong words. You did say you could not have anything more than friends with benefits, so I just assumed you were not ruling that out.

It is quite normal for men and women to look at someone who they consider attractive and think “he/she is good-looking”. I can appreciate handsome men (I’m female) but also even if I see an attractive girl, I think “what a pretty face she has”. This is just noticing the world around you. It means nothing, unless you take these thoughts to the next stage and start thinking of those random people lustfully. I would fully expect my husband to notice attractive women in the street or on TV, but that’s the end of it, and the same applies to me as far as other men are concerned!

What I’m trying to say is that you can’t control someone’s thoughts and particularly if someone is young, they are bound to see what is all around them. It’s different to go looking for it with any degree of determination, but pictures of women in scanty clothes or swimwear are in many main-stream magazines and on many news websites. A young man looking at a picture of a woman wearing underwear doesn’t mean anything, really.

If you can find someone who will glance and quickly turn away, that would be good behavior. Don’t you think?

It is perfectly acceptable for people to be attracted to people who are not their spouse. It is a natural human response to be attracted to beautiful things, and there are many different levels and types of attraction. But a person must be able to keep their feelings and attractions in a good and Holy order- letting those things become disordered is what leads to infidelity. A man should never look upon a woman with the same eyes that he sets upon his wife, but men will always be attracted to beauty.

A man that is attracted to women is a healthy man.

Thanks for reading it all Carol - I should have been clearer 🙂

Isca - I agree that you can still find someone good looking; however, I’m talking about being attracted to them as opposed to simply finding them good looking. For example I am straight and can find another woman good looking, but when I’m single and see a handsome guy, my heart beats a bit faster and I have a nervous excitement when walking past him or making eye contact. That is different from simply noticing that someone is good looking - that’s me being attracted to them. When I’m in a relationship and I see a good looking guy, my reaction is not attraction, but simply noticing that they’re good looking. With that said, I know it’s normal for men to be attracted to other women even in a relationship, but I cannot come to terms with it.

Acadi - yes it is good behaviour, given that most men wouldn’t even admit being attracted despite blatantly staring at other people’s breasts. However, the fact remains that I can’t handle the fact they’re attracted to begin with, if even for a second.

Josh, you’re absolutely right - it is natural - but I can’t tolerate it, so I have to remain single. I do feel emotionally unfulfilled being single but I would feel much worse if I were in a relationship because of this issue.

My husband does the same thing occasionally. I have to give him a nudge to snap him back into reality. It makes me feel so inadequate. There is enough good about our relationship that the focus is soon back on me. But, I always say, if you know the problem, you can solve it. Do you know if this guy is really that into you? If his eye wanders, where is his mind? You can find a boyfriend who doesn’t do that, you can minimize your feelings when it happens, or you can tell him that when he stares at a woman’s breasts, it makes you very uncomfortable. The boyfriend owes you respect, and this type of behavior is not appropriate, especially if it happens all of the time. You want companionship from someone who holds you in his best interests and the feeling is mutual. I believe there is someone out there for you.

Anna, I’m sorry to hear that your husband does the same thing sometimes  It is hurtful.

Lukasz and I broke up 2 years ago but we were very in love. From what I’ve now learned, all men are attracted to other women. They may not go out of their way or they may look away straight away, but the fact is they are still attracted to a pretty woman if only for a second.

People have tried to convince me until they were blue in the face that there is nothing wrong with a man being attracted to other women while in a relationship. I’ve heard it all, and I’m not changing my mind.

But what’s tough to deal with is that I don’t feel emotionally fulfilled and wonder how to move forward. Relationships and friendships are different. With regular friends, no holding hands or anything, not planning things around them, not going with them to the park with arms around each other, not buying a dress and being excited about how much they’ll like it. I do feel empty and don’t know how to deal with the fact that I will stay single for life. Thoughts?

You seem to have a hyper active sense of jealousy and what it means to be in a relationship. That isn’t good. You need to chill out a little.

Here’s the good news. Your whole problem is a misunderstanding. When men look at a picture of a woman in lingerie or naked or in a magazine or whatever, they aren’t cheating on you. They aren’t looking at a menu. At least not a menu that you would also be a part of, as if they are making a choice between them and you. They are merely looking, and when they look away all thoughts of the picture evaporate into nothingness. There is no relationship with the picture. I wouldn’t even call it another woman. It is merely a picture. Men are magnetically drawn to look at such things and it is no insult to you nor is it cheating on you in any way. It’s like when you’re hungry and smell good food cooking, it is an instinctual response for men to look at such things. The only way a man wouldn’t would be if he had no sex drive.

There is simply no way you will ever find a man who is only attracted to you and no other woman. That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Women may operate like that, but that is not how men operate. Period. You have a fundamental misunderstanding of how a man’s sex drive works.

You hold men accountable by their actions towards other women, not by whether or not their eyes drifted towards a picture or a woman walking by, etc. It is not easy for men to police their eyes, they should, but you don’t need to get all worked up about it.

White sheep, sure, I would feel jealous if I had a boyfriend and he was looking at another woman’s breasts. Normally a wife would also feel jealous of her husband’s mistress. But jealousy is not the core of the issue. I simply think it’s inappropriate for a man to be attracted to other women while in a relationship; it’s my moral values. I know that men forget about it in a few seconds but it just doesn’t coincide with my moral values, which is why I’m staying single.

Your moral values are contrary to the nature of male sexuality. Men will always be attracted to women. It isn’t a choice we make. I’d face my death before I would sleep with another woman, but I can’t help being attracted to them.

If that’s your standard, that’s up to you, I just wanted to lake sure you’re clear on that point.

Are your standards as demanding for the other aspects you look for in a potential spouse?

My wife had all sorts of silly fairy tail nonsense in her head, not all of which have I managed to disabuse her of.

I know that men are attracted to other women; that’s why I’m staying single. It’s tough though because I would have loved to have been in a relationship.

Generally the only thing I care about is if the man has a beautiful soul. I don’t care about physical appearance, if he’s working, how much money he has, his criminal record, etc. However now I’m not looking for a relationship any more

How can you be so sure you’re right? Maybe some of your thoughts are fairy tails too;)

I think you misunderstand how women feel. It not about how men feel or think. It is about how women feel and think about what men do.

One of the best books I have ever read that addresses this is What Women Want Men to Know by Barbara DeAngeles. This will help any woman to understand her own feelings as well as men to understand

I think you misunderstand how women feel. It not about how men feel or think. It is about how women feel and think about what men do.
We agree. I don’t know how women feel, hope I didn’t imply such. I do try to guess. I was trying to comment on how men ARE, not how we feel or think.

I agree it is about how women feel and think about what men do. I think it would be great if you and the op would state just exactly how you feel and think about your man looking in a Victoria’s secret, lingerie ad, or playboy, at an attractive woman passing by, or whatever. That is what this thread is about. And what do you believe the man is thinking?

I think the man is thinking “Mmmm nice”

This isn’t simply a matter of jealousy, although of course I would feel jealous. I find the idea that any man would love his partner but yet enjoy the sight of another woman’s breasts etc to be incomprehensible and alien, to the point that sometimes I feel like I’m being punked and it’s not really true 😃

Like I said I get immense pleasure and excitement out of being around handsome men or even seeing them on TV when I’m single but the second I even have a crush on a guy, all that turns off, I can still recognise that a guy is good looking of course but all the attraction immediately shuts off. I always thought decent guys were this way too so I was in for a rude awakening…

It was a trick question. The man is not thinking.

Alien and incomprehensible is not an answer that I understand.

Sure, he may not be literally thinking that, but that’s the best way to articulate his feeling:)
Yes, that’s how I feel about it. It seems crazy and out of this world to me!

I think you should pray about it and ask for guidance in discovering your calling. Some people are not called to marriage or religious life, but you may be.

The best way to describe what a man is feeling and thinking when he sees such a picture is that he is mesmerized or entranced. As soon as he looks away the thought of it dissipates. It isn’t something that men are going to think about later. I say this because my wife will sometimes mention something like that later on. Say we saw a tv program with a hot chick on the tv and then later she mentions something about it. This is alien and incomprehensible to me, as that woman is nowhere in my mind by then. Why did she bring it up?

You had said you wonder how to move forward. You can realize that men are like iron and women are like magnets and that there will simply always be an attraction there that they have no control over and that you judge them by their actions. If it weren’t for this men would never get involved with women in the first place. The reason that your man is attracted to you enough to have become “your man” is exactly due to the fact that he is attracted to women, all the time. It is entirely a sexual magnetism. That is the cause for men to be in relationships with women. The way to move forward is to either get over it, or choose to be celibate, and then move on with your life in whichever decision you have made.

Personally, I think this is a trivial matter and that you should just accept it. I know you don’t feel that way, but that is my opinion.
