What is it about Catholics or the Catholic Church that you dislike?

There is nothing I dislike about the Catholic Church. There is much I dislike about many Catholics. I believe Pope John Paul, II said “The greatest threat to Christianity is Christians”.
I dislike anyone who claims to be Catholic and then lives in a way contrary to Catholic teaching (i.e. pro-choice Catholics). Actions speak louder than words and while we all fall short, we should all try a little harder.

Well…I’m a cradle Catholic revert and there are a few things, specifically concerning the Church I attend.
I wish Protestants were correct when they say that Catholics believe in works.
As Catholics, we believe both in faith AND works.
I’d like to see Catholics in my parish actually perform a few “public” work projects.
Just simple things for each other, like a door greeter who actually hold doors for the handicapped and for families and single mothers attempting to get through the Church doors for Mass.
How is it possible that the most antisocial families are chosen as door greeters?
Shake hands, hold hands. Get the scowl off your body language.
Fill the baptismal font thingy with fresh holy water before Mass that we make the sign of the cross with. How can a Catholic door greeter not check that, don’t they realize the significance of what is being done when people dip their fingers into the blessed water and make the cross.
I think my pet peeve however is how content Catholics are, being ignorant of their faith and ignorant of the need to be diligent with each other about the faith.
The Catholics who think they are Pope. They haven’t read a word he’s ever written.
Adult faith formation. Why is that always dead.

Protestants run circles around Catholics in Scripture study. That should not be. Most Protestants give their parishioners the opportunity to attend Scripture study prior to their attending Sunday church services.
Sadly, as a whole, Catholics make little to no attempt at 'saving" those Catholic children who only attend public schools. These children are basically being thrown to the wolves when it comes to establishing a lifelong connection with Christ (I should know, I was one of those kids).

I’ve overheard quite a few cradle Catholics try to explain to non-Catholics the role of Mary in our faith. I normally expect to cringe at their explanation since I know what the EV is hearing but I know the heart of the cradle Catholic is in the right place.
No wonder I seem to have this desire every year to ask my 6th grade students “Do we as Catholics worship Mary?” It never seems to be a dull topic for me with my class.

Oh, so true - of buildings constructed after Vatican II. I had a Priest tell me that it was because no one knew which way things were going at that time so to stay on the “safe” side, churches were constructed to look more “modern” and to blend in with the local architecture. You are correct: ugly! And plain. Some I’ve seen actually seem more protestant, even puritan, inside.
I LOVE my church. It was built in 1856 and is a most gorgeous example of God being honored by the builders. Very Gothic. Right in downtown York, PA too!
To me, the ambience adds to the entire worship experience if the ceilings soar, the building and floor are stone, and the statuary is plentiful and beautiful. We even have the old wooden confessionals.

It’s not so much about “disliking” Catholics, (and truth be told it pretty much goes to many who call themselves Christians)
For me I wish there was a great desire to authentic discipleship to Our Lord…that people would even have something of an idea of that that means…
Another thing that I find myself dismayed over is the lack of knowledge of Sacred Scripture…
I went with our music director and our cantor to the daily televised Mass that our archdiocese does as it was our pastor’s turn to celebrate it…
The two of them were talking and the cantor asked what the Gospel reading for the day was…the music director had a vague idea of what it was about and said that it was from Matthew…
The cantor said…with no disrespected intended…"the only thing I know about the gospel of Matthew is what a remember from ‘Godspell’ " (the musical)
My heart just fell
Another example…On the feast of the Assumption…
The reader and the cantor of the particular Mass were caught off guard (Im guessing)
They didnt recognized the Gospel reading that Fr had read…and the reason they didnt recognize it because he chanted Mary’s reply to Elizabeth…
(and yes this was the reader who read for that very Mass)
After the Mass they were looking thru the misslette trying to figure out “what did Fr just read…I dont’ remember that”
I had to point out that he just chanted Mary part…that yes he read the right Gospel reading…
Again…I was dismayed…I havent figured out what is the most charitable way of approaching these things…
(I should add that one of them does have something of a…ummm…personality conflict with our priest and tends to put him down on occasion…I know that happens with human beings…But I just havent figured out how to deal with it appropriately
)

Yeah but many at those other churches have no business singing…Most of them can’t sing as compared to those in other churches I’ve attended.

I have many friends who are Catholic who are all right.
There are some things I dislike about the Catholic Church:
- Heavy emphasis on structure and organization to the point that the local church tends to disappear within the universal church. The local parish simply becomes a “part” of a larger church.
- Modernistic developments
- Freely makes bad changes (e.g. suppressing the Tridentine Latin Mass) but remains adamant about not changing other things that may benefit the church in being changed.
- Teachings on social justice and Christian society
- Charitable work amongst the poor and marginalized
- A LOT more sane than most secular organizations that have lost sight of man’s meaning in life.

They don’t know anything whatsoever about the history of the Eastern Church or it’s theological traditions, yet they’re quick and eager to stomp on the Orthodox.
Catholic bishops condone blatant idolatry with respect to the Saints. (I’m distinguishing idolatry from proper veneration.)
Priests and bishops put insignificant attention into the preaching ministry at their parishes. This is why Calvary Chapels and the like exist and grow. In effect, Catholic clergy are the cause of such Protestant churches.
But on the good side, nobody has a richer body of teachings on social matters, and their charitable organizations are right up there with the Red Cross and Salvation Army. And nobody else keeps their church buildings open during the day.

A condesending or holier then thou attitude. When they think they can judge the hearts of their fellow believers by externals. Especial if you don’t go to the EF, receive CITH, or don’t kneel for receiving communion. Sometimes I wonder where Catholic charity went?
Catholics that don’t know their faith and don’t make an effort to find out. It’s a lot easier now to do that then it was 20 years ago. We should at least be on the path.
