- Seemingly wide held assumption that those that disagree with or leave the church have a defect in understanding
- Unwillingness or inability to comprehend that those of other denominations hold their beliefs just as deeply and strongly as they do…and if one acknowledges this it’s because that protestant has been brainwashed with lies.
- Amount of what I call affiliation inertia…that is Catholics who believe maybe 50% of what the church teaches, rail against various teachings, rarely go to mass, but call themselves 100%, diehard Catholics
- the “say what?” factor. That is a history that so often looks like a rule was made by the church to handle the rule that was made for the other rule that came about because the rule didn’t work and we needed a loophole to explain why…
- to see something that is at its heart so good not be able to get out of its own way when it comes to scandals of various sorts.
- A willingness to throw innocents under the bus in order to preserve “the institution.”
- desire to paint protestants with such a broad stereotypes…we all have loud preachers and rock show services that are about nothing but a good meal and having a social hour…it’s very insulting. Well guess what, we don’t all have services of that nature. And I have the feeling those that post on such know that and post it anyway.
- Fact they’ve made their own rules and regulations so confusing that 10 priests deacons and pastoral associates asked the same question will give 10 different answers…and not just slightly different but wildly different.
- the emotional attachment to the words “heresy” and “heretic.” — although I am beginning to view those as badges of honor.

Is this true? I thought it was all wrote down in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. I got told on another thread by a Catholic that the papacy is the principle of unity for Catholics. Do the Catholic priests sometimes teach different things from the pope?

I have to agree. I live in a neighborhood where I’m surrounded by Catholics, but these are Catholics who don’t seem to live out Catholic virtues.
My mother and her family had a reputation for one thing or another, and I feel that I have been stigmatized my whole life. I’ve been guilty by association. I’ve seen my mother in at least one argument of epic proportions with some neighbors. (My mother is elderly now and I’m living with her to take care of her.)
And, I sense that my mother and her six siblings had a lot of arguments in their childhood. My mother has often overwhelmed me with arguing, beyond the bounds of reason. She used to yell a lot in the house and I think the neighbors heard her rants. I tried to get my mother to stop the senseless yelling, but she just always said that she didn’t care. Well, there you go.
I’ve simply had to get my own bearings and live a Catholic life as best as I know how and that the Lord allows.
I pray for all these neighbors, as scripture commands of us. I hold my head high, I try to do the right thing. But, I don’t hold my breath waiting to be forgiven by any of these neighbors for whatever they think we’ve done to them.
In a larger context, my father and step-father died before I was 12. I didn’t see the Knights of Columbus trying to help my mother (a widow) and me (an orphan) as the letter of James commands. I have a ton of uncles and aunts who ignored me when I was grieving and depressed for a decade over my father’s death.One of my aunts was always sarcastic and said that she married the man, not the family. So, she didn’t give a rip about anybody else.
It’s hard for me today not to be bitter about how I was abused and neglected as a child by family and neighbors. I didn’t even realize until decades later how these people just lived their merry lives and ignored us, left us lonely and in need.

CITH–communion in the hand…vs. communion on the tongue. The Chuch allows both but there are those that not only have their preference but prefer to try and make that choice for everyone.
EF–Extraordinary Form–of Mass. I think this is the Latin form of Mass. Many people LOVE it…which is ok with me…but again…there are those that think the OF (Ordinary Form) is somehow inferior. Both are valid Masses.
I truly am reverent and find Christ at our OF of Mass…
And it was the OF that brought me back to my Catholic roots…and converted my husband.Thanks for asking:thumbsup:

I don’t like some Catholics for the same reasons I don’t like some Protestants, Jews, Hindus, Muslims, Atheists etc …
- they believe they are ‘holier’ than others or possess some extra special knowledge about God that makes them superior to others
- they are arrogant though in the same breath they will claim to be humble
- they judge the heart of others
- they are quick to label others with derogatory terms such as heretic, infidel, disbeliever, satan child etc
- they think they are infallible
- they believe blind obedience is a virtue
- they sacrifice love for the sake of dogma and rules
- they will go to any length to defend evil rather than admit that they have done something wrong (i.e. the Church’s relentless protection of pedophile priests)
- it is based on doing good and having faith in order to get a reward
- there is inordinate faith in humans such as saints and Mary.
- the Christ of the Church is a perversion of Jesus of the Gospels. There is too much emphasis on Christ the King whilst Christ the Servant if too often forgotten
- it is a very lonely faith
- it is a religion that takes and takes but does not give back until many good people, with simple faith and good intentions just get burned out
- it has so little focus on God the Father when the heart and soul of Jesus’ teaching was always about the Father … for me this is the biggest chasm in the church. Jesus said that the Father is greater than I and all of his teachings were about the Father. His entire life (as per the Gospels) was the perfect example of love FOR THE FATHER. His life and teachings were never about himself. In fact, his entire heart and soul was about the Father, and yet the church (which claims to be the true church founded by Jesus) appears to miss this point completely.In my view, this is the biggest tragedy of the Church and any Christian faith

I like some Catholics. I met a couple of nuns who were in the neighborhood. They were delightful women who impressed me with their devotion to those they wanted to help, and to the life they had chosen as nuns.
But, there are some Catholics (and they are not alone, Protestants, Jews, Muslims, etc. have their share as well) who are so zealous in their approach to their religious life that any hint of disagreement or disapproval from others is quickly attacked.
These people don’t live their faith, they simply want to berate others while expounding on their own “piety.”
In other words, unlike the nuns, who have dedicated their lives to doing good works for others and have eschewed secular lives for one of spirituality and devotion, the holier than thou crowd are often blowhards who haven’t done a thing for anyone.
All the preaching on the planet won’t fill one belly, befriend one lonely person, bind the wounds of a single person who has been injured or shine the light of knowledge on a person who is unschooled.
Aside from that, I find the nitpicking done by some Catholics and other Christians to border on nonsense.
I may be looking at things from a different perspective, especially being a Unitarian Universalist, but I also often find the squabbling among you Christians to be disappointing.

I don’t really have any issues with individual Catholics. For the most part in my experience, Catholics are good, kind and decent people and Christians. I do have some issues with more ‘traditionalist’ or ‘fundamentalist’ Catholics who take a very hard line on various issues. As I consider myself liberal and progressive, I doubt I would get along well with a Traditionalist Catholic who had retrogressive views on various issues.
I think overall the Roman church is like any other church. There are many signs of excellence and grace in the church but I also see the church is full of sinful human beings doing terrible things, as the sex scandals involving priests illustrate. While the church may be holy and pure in God’s eyes, the church in the world as it is stained by human sin and the scandal of schism and disunity in Christ’s body as evidenced by the different groups of Christians who constantly bicker and curse each other and proclaim they are the only path to salvation. This is mirrored in the Catholic Church itself, whose Catholic unity is being seriously undermined by the horrible ‘culture wars’ between conservatives and progressives on various issues. I don’t think the Roman church is perfect, but it is not evil either. I would prefer to see the church move away from the conservative and reactionist turn it has taken over the past 30-40 years or so since the publication of Evangelium Vitae.
I would also like to see more accountability on the part of the church’s leaders to the laity and the wider world for their mistakes. I would also like to see a less rigid line on moral issues and the church to move away from its emphasis on submission to official teaching and infallibility in faith and morals to a more open approach to ethical and doctrinal questions. And I would like to see a move away from the trend to ecclesial triumphalism I often see in declarations from the CDF and from aggressive Catholics who try to prosleytize non-Catholic Christians into joining the Roman Church on the basis of ‘ex ecclesia nulla salus’, which is moving away from the more cautious ecunemical approach the church took from Vatican II to the mid 1990’s. Speaking gently, rationally in a respectful and charitable manner does far more for the credibility of the Roman Church than negativity will do.

UniversalistGuy answered the OPs question cleverly saying it was “baiting” which is starting a topic with a question designed to draw a large response usually by saying or hinting at something sure to be controversial. In this case, the question doesn’t even match the OPs post as he is not asking what HE dislikes about Catholicism but is actually asking about OTHERS (increasing the “bait”).

As for me, I recognize that there are sinners and saints in most religions. I think it silly to dislike someone just because of their religion.
As for the belief system itself, well…there are too many things I disagree with to list.
And there are too many darn rules! And as for the guilt I see in half of the posts on the board here…MAN! You give the Jewish peeps I know a run for their money!
Also the belief in the 'real presence" freaks me out a bit.

Is it not true that the Holy Spirit has Unversalistguy here to Learn the Catholic Faith? Or do you think he is here by Chance? Nothing is by Chance when you come to a Catholic website it is the Holy Spirit that has him here and it is up to him if he or you want to learn more about the True Faith and yes everyone has his or her freewill to listen and learn about the True Faith, what is your will about this?

When I joined, my sponsor was also a convert and he jokingly said he was a “metholic” meaning a Methodist convert. Needing some name for CAF and not being very creative, I settled on lutherlic in the same way. Take it as Lutheran convert to 100%, no exceptions, Catholic.
