Why I don't like Catholics?

There’s nothing about Catholics that I dislike. That’s like asking what I dislike about Lutherans or Methodists; it’s a case-by-case basis! And if I do dislike something about a group, I probably need to ask the Spirit for more charity!

As for the Church (and not the people who identify themselves with it), I dislike liturgical abuses and irreverence. These things are straight out of my Protestant past, and I regret to see the enthusiasm with which they have been adopted in some Catholic circles. But overall, their presence is more indicative of the state of our culture; they will go away in time. 👍

Is it not true that the Holy Spirit has Unversalistguy here to Learn the Catholic Faith? Or do you think he is here by Chance? Nothing is by Chance when you come to a Catholic website it is the Holy Spirit that has him here and it is up to him if he or you want to learn more about the True Faith and yes everyone has his or her freewill to listen and learn about the True Faith, what is your will about this?

I dislike anyone who claims to be Catholic and then lives in a way contrary to Catholic teaching (i.e. pro-choice Catholics). Actions speak louder than words and while we all fall short, we should all try a little harder.

It’s Catholics rather than the Catholic Church that bothers me. Too many Catholic politicians and people in the Catholic Church seem to disregard their faith completely when it comes to how they live their personal lives. They vote pro-choice, use birth control, wink at abortion, don’t really believe the teaching on the Eucharist … the Church is failing to get its people to live like Catholics. I don’t know what the cure is.
 
I dislike catholics who attend mass and finish mass still with the same attitude…

I have no problem with Catholics, just those who constantly put us down. I don’t even particular have a problem with the Catholic Church. I just disagree with its teaching.

Thanks, Bill, for illustrating exactly what I’m talking about. Because people like you, who give Catholics a bad name, are so threatened by the idea that somebody may have actually studied Catholicism under Catholic teachers and from Catholic sources, and found it wanting, all you can do is to put me down.

Notice how you never asked me a question about any specific doctrine or why I disagree with it, you just went right for the “well, you’re just an idiot and there’s no way you could possibly know what you’re talking about” card.

So goodbye, Bill.
 
There’s really something wrong with a “Catholic” online site that has, in the past two days, posted two threads that focus on NOTHING BUT THE NEGATIVE with regard to the Church and its members.

I find both of these threads completely uncharitable, absolutely against the two laws of love that Jesus left us, and I can’t think why you people participating in these two threads think that your actions are in any way Catholic.

That is a unfair and false accusation. We have coffee, donuts, tacos, and when possible menudo, gorditas and flan. I personally could do without the donuts, but we try to welcome our visiting protestant brothers. 😃

Aside from that, I find the nitpicking done by some Catholics and other Christians to border on nonsense.

I may be looking at things from a different perspective, especially being a Unitarian Universalist, but I also often find the squabbling among you Christians to be disappointing.

Hi there Seeker. I wouldn’t get too discouraged, You are on a religious website, so you’re going to run into people who are a bit more “enthusiastic” about their faith and who will also have more spirited responses. Of the 50 million or so Catholics in the US and many more throughout the world, you’re seeing about 50 or so who post on here regularly and maybe a dozen that are on on here all the time. That’s what I’ve gathered in my whole week looking through this board anyway. 🙂 Same goes for the other denominations on here. It’s such a small sample as to mean very little, and of this small sample, not even all of them get wrapped around the axle over issues. I bet most Christians would be somewhat more congenial. Of the Catholics I know, most of them wouldn’t even log into such a website unless time spent on here could be redeemed for mass attendance credits. It does make it a little hard for folks like me who are looking for answers, but I guess that’s the way it is. BTW, there are people who post uplifting things on here too, but they don’t get many responses. It’s like t he Jerry Springer show - no one would watch if everyone was polite, so it’s the brawls that keep it moving. Unfortunately. Anyway, I don’t think we can come to too many conclusions about Catholics or anyone else by browsing this site. It’s a very very tiny sample and a very skewed sample as well.

In all fairness, I forgot to include myself in that assessment. I am probably not a typical sample of agnostic people either. So here we all are. 🙂

My answer to this question has changed in the last year. I honestly have to say that, as a prospective convert, the lack of Bible study and sunday school for kids is difficult to overcome. I have a vibrant and educated church family and it is hard to trade it for a parish without the same. I also dislike preaching hate toward other denominations from the pulpit, no matter where that pulpit is.(I have found this in more protestant churches, but it is alive in some parishes too.)
 
I certainly like numerous Catholics as individuals. Most of the ones I know (including relatives) have a genuine but relaxed faith. They aren’t always ready to put down other religions.

  The Catholics that disturb me are those who are rigid in their thinking. There seems to be lots of that here at CAF, though few Catholics I know are like that. 

  Coming from a mixed Catholic/Protestant heritage I've had an opportunity to compare and contrast.

  It's very difficult to generalize about Protestants. Mainline Protestants are very open and ecumenical. They disagree with Catholicism but have the attitude of 'think and let think'. The more evangelical Protestants are more likely to be aggressive and ready to debate religion. They resemble those Catholics who think they alone have the truth and everyone else is at least wrong and quite likely on their way to you know where.

 Catholic churches in this area are larger and less friendly than Protestant churches. Their communicants don't sing nearly as well and most of them seem to race off after mass. Protestants sing much better and most of them hang around over coffee and cookies. 

 Both work together in certain areas projects, especially the soup kitchen and food bank. 

 I think the sexual scandal has hurt the Catholic image among most people of every faith. This has been reenforced by some priests in this area running off with parish funds, etc. Catholicism ought to have a married clergy. Thousands of normal, healthy young men would likely respond. Protestant ministers and their families often serve as important examples to congregations. 

  We could go on, but maybe I've left the main thread already.

  God bless his children whatever their creed, color or country, and may religion become a bridge and not a barrier.

As an Orthodox (former RC), I don’t hear the word heretic applied to me, but if someone were to suggest I’m an S word, I feel annoyed and feel the person ridiculous.
