Would it be a good idea for the pope to fire bishops and cardinals (from the Catholic point of view)?
Not necessarily…I don’t think we always know all the facts…and I mean the real facts…not what the media has reported.

There are pastors in other denominations that just move on to other churches…but the media does not report on that because it’s all decentrailized…

I don’t believe that there is any creedence to the idea that the media is skewed against Catholics.

Well…then you eyes are blinded…

Actually the media in general is skewed…they report (sensationalize) whatever will sell papers.

Well, do you care to give some examples of it? The facts are that the Catholic church for decades has ignored and refused to deal with multitudes of child sex abuse cases worldwide! Priests, Bishops and other clergy have been allowed to move and thus avoid being held accountable for their life destroying actions. How can you say that this is not the truth?? It’s documented for gosh sake!! Where has there been a scandal of this magnitude in the last thousand years??

I’m not saying there wasn’t abuse. I’m saying what has been “documented”…where is the documentation? From who? and from where?

There has been plenty of abuse in public schools and other denominations…but there is no money in ferreting that out.

Which is a shame to the real victims…ALL of them (public schools, etc.)

As far as the media being skewed…I see it all the time…I work in state government.

They don’t report all the facts…just what sells.

For a small example…thousands protested outside the capitol…yea…my window faces it…there were like 5 to 10 protestors…

HAPPENS ALL THE TIME.

I think that you are burying your head in the sand to think that this abuse hasn’t been validly reported upon and documented worldwide.

I agree, the media is skewed towards sensationalization

Getting this thread back on track, I also like Catholics and many of the people i respect most are Catholics.

I work in Govt. also and I understand what you are saying. However the decades of worldwide abuse going unchecked doesn’t qualify as misrepresentation. Not hardly.

So you think the media reports fairly and accurately???

I think that in light of the explosion to end all explosions known as the child sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic church is horrible based upon what it really and truly is and not helped or hurt further because of how the media has reported it.

How exactly do you believe the media has misrepresented it?

Yeah, I know. I just wish the leader of the Catholic church wouldn’t tolerate it so much. He needs to fire those priests and cardinals…why hasn’t the pope fired the bishops and cardinals and priests who were involved in this? He lets them stay?
While I appreciate the sentiment (and believe me, if it were up to me, a lot of heads would roll), I just don’t think it works that way. I’m not sure that the Pope is exactly like a CEO of a private company in terms of firing bishops. Also, there is “due process” for both secular courts and in the church. The wheels of justice do turn slowly, it is going to take time.

In my post I listed just some of the US bishops that “resigned” as a result of the scandal (don’t make the mistake of thinking that a guy like Weakland just suddenly did the right thing all on his own). Some of the ones you mention (Irish) are more recent cases, and I might say to wait a bit and see how they end up. As the scandal progressed in what Richard Neuhaus used to call the “long lent” of 2002-2003-2004 it took a while for these cases to work through the system.

I’ve thought about this a lot. I have been around the barnyard many times and have been an adherent in most manifestations Christendom. This has included liberal protestant, evangelical, Calvinist, Arminian, Eastern Orthodox and now Catholic. (This was over a 55 year period.) I’ve known a number of people from many faiths and have had friends and colleagues all across the theological/philosophical spectrum.

I’ve met many cranky, annoying people who are Christians, Jews, Muslims, atheists, etc. as well as absolutely wonderful people in these groups. But to be completely honest, I’ve never met a petulant Buddhist. Actually, aside from a few theological elephants in the room, I never met a Buddhist I didn’t like.

“Why I don’t like Catholics?” That famous philosopher, Rodney King, has the definitive question for all of Christendom. “Can’t we all just get along”? Amen Rodney.

there nothing i dont like there are some protant christians i dont like though
