Why i don't read the Bible

Lectio Divina involves slowly reading one verse of scripture and meditating on that verse throughout the day. This is the traditional way that monks use Lectio Divina.
My Spiritual Director had me start by reading Romans. I would read the verse and use it as the first line of my journal entry. One thing to keep in mind is the importance of being non-judgmental. It is simply a way of allowing the scripture to become a part of you and relating it to what ever may be happening in life at that moment. The verse might continue to be the focus of the entry or the entry might go someplace else entirely.

For me, personally, i see one problem: The way my life is going these days (changes, chaos, confusion:whacky: , “alone-ness”, etc…), i feel that i need to meditate on not just one scripture but all of them… or at least 100.

This is not easy…But it is an entirely different way to read the Bible. For someone who prefers to “hear” Scripture…that’s really what it’s like, more than like reading as we usually think of it.
The verse comes back to you, over & over, without re-reading it. It becomes a part of your day.
When I first tried it, I was convinced that this was the stupidest thing I had ever got myself into. In time, I realized that I was, as I say, listening, not reading.
Its definitely worth the effort. Really, an:thumbsup: amazing thing, to find how much can be found in a few verses, or even just one verse…

This is another weird thing: have never (virtually never) been to parish where they had Bible studies… Oh, wait, i remember ONE…

If you are interested in a Bible study at your parish, perhaps you should mention it to your pastor. There may be many other people who would also be interested. Maybe you are being called to lead a Bible study. My parish has Bible study (actually 3 different ones). I like the one that is held on Sundays between the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Masses. I have been attending for 6 years now. We are on summer break now but will be starting up again next Sunday.

I run the bible study in my church so, of course i’m big on bible study groups.But be careful- don’t go to a any group that uses an Evangelical bible study.Right now there are a lot of very good Catholic bible studies- so make sure it’s Catholic…Reading the O.T. is never a waste.some of the stuff in it may seem a little violent in the light of Christ but remember the O.T. was written over centuries -thousands of years ago so it reflects the temperment history &mores of that specific time and place And it is Salvation History- one thing leads to another in a continuous stream until you have the culmination in the the birth,death resurrection of Christ and the birth of His Church on earth Also what we hear in Mass is a pericope- a piece of scripture .it is always important to read in context -my pastor always recommended we hit the bible after Mass to get"the rest of the story!!".You can miss a lot of subtleties and a lot of really great stuff if you take it out of it’s context.(protestants love to do that)The point is every book of the bible has something to say is important in salvation history:thumbsup:
