Why I enjoy church hopping

Prodigal Son

If you attend mass every week and participate in the sacraments then whatever else you do on top of it for spiritual fulfilment is ok. My wife does this coz she likes the “fellowship” and music of the local protestant church. She was invited along by potestant friends who said it was basically non denomenational.

However, she is also a very strong and courageous person and quite happily tells all in that protestant church that she is first and foremost a Catholic. This fact upsets some people in the church - who see her as a bit of a threat because she has challenged the views of some of the lapsed Catholics who also attend that Church to explain what they think about the eucharist.

Prodigal Son - have courage and strength of charachter in your faith and do not be take the easy road. Have a great Easter.

Part of what I’ve been able to accompolish here is to disspell misconceptions along both sides. I’ll give you a typical service, just so you realize, it’s not the harsh anti catholic movement too many Catholics think are.

.
Lots of non catholics would say that they have nothing against that catholic church. But whereas they can happily church hop from one type of protestant church to another - try asking them to come to mass with you.

Oh yeah- well that’s their problem. For some reason the Eastern Churches can be so “gripey.” at times. They need to loosen up. Maybe it’s the beards. . . Hmmm. . .

The Russian Orthodox Church is the most disgruntled one.

It seems the the Orthodox are characterized by division and schism. I have heard that they prefer smaller homogenous churches.
Well, they are trying to do what they think is correct, so I cannot fault them that. Although the beard thing in Alabama would be WAY hot in the 8 months were we have high heat and humidity.

The division and schism that you speak of is both real and over-blown. There is less division at the high levels of doctrine and more at the lower levels of community. I will not go so far as to say they prefer homogenous churches, but it does seem that they have them.

I know exactly why you enjoy church hopping–so you don’t have to settle down and take root and grow in one place, and be a responsible, living part of a faith community.

C. S. Lewis, through the mouth of Screwtape, talks about the great spiritual danger in becoming a church-hopper–or “connosieur of churches” as Screwtape puts it.

I church hop Catholic Churches and I know this isn’t really right. . . 😊

I believe that I have a certain problem in regards to being part of a church community. Truthfully, I really don’t care to get involved in my nearest church. It is VERY crowded and I just want to recieve the sacraments.

In my early 20’s, after a few years not attending mass and staying away from the church all together, I returned with a zeal and unquenchable thirst for the lord and all he has to teach me as well as fellowship with others.

It wasn’t enough to simply have mass on Sunday, so I looked for other churches that had services throughout the week, especially in the evenings since I’m a hopeless night owl. In my world then, as it still is now, I very much wish there was more, much more out there, any mainstream denomination included, and absolutely, this includes Mass as well.

Well, one of the goals I was trying to accompolish originally was to define, what it takes to become born again. I talked to the priest at my local church, I talked to ministers and pastors at the others, I talked to members in all of the congregations, and in each case, never was there a clear answer. This in a way left me lacking, for I was looking for some direction, a working game plan, and since none existed, I had to create my own.

I bought my first bible, it was necessary since I was attending bible study with one of the churches I was visiting. I decided to simply read it cover to cover, when I started, in the back of my mind I remembered being told by the Catholic church, that I had no business in doing so, that I could not properly interpret it and in fact, felt guilty, that I was defying some edict or something. That feeling soon melted away, and after finishing it, I had a completely different perspective of the word, one of amazement, the richness of it all, the combination of all of it, start to finish and how it all fit together, the greatest story ever to be told in the history of mankind, all right here in black and white.

During those early years, I attended parishes that were down right insulting, I attended parishes that were also very inspirational as well. So much of the time, the same messages being taught both within the Catholic and Protestant circut, it completely changed my perspective along exactly who these protestants are, what they believe, and how the same message is being taught in so many of them, why some of us as Catholics condemn them is beyond me. I look for what is good, what is similar, what we can agree upon and I ignore the rest, for that creates nothing but dissention. I’ve learned so much from my protestant friends, it just makes sense to continue here.

I still church hop, not to replace Mass, but to soak in the messages being taught, for I have discernment and know full well if there is a hidden agenda, or if the message being taught is not what the lord wants us to know about. That same first bible is in really bad shape now, pages falling out, the lettering “Holy Bible” on the front of it 1/2 worn off, and it’s clear to anybody, this is not an ornament just lying around the place, it’s getting good use.

Anyway, I figured I should create a thread on it, for I’m getting questioned on another about it, and opt to not let it go off topic there, so this is it. The bottom line, the end result of this, my faith has increased, my understanding of God and his children has expanded, and I am giving a lot of credit to the protestants to the point, I now consider myself Catholic and Protestant, unpolitically correct as it may be, that is my stance. I refuse to claim a denomination, always keeping my roots within the Catholic faith and keeping that strong, yet not forsaking my protestant bretheren and enjoying their company within fellowship.
Your problem is that you are a walking, breathing hypocrisy and you’re the only one who doesn’t see it.

You CANNOT be both Catholic and Protestant. If you embbrace Protestantism, you cannot be Catholic.

Do you even know what it means to be a Catholic? To be a Protestant?
I certainly hope you aren’t profaning the body and Blood of our Lord at the Mass by receiving communion because you have illustrated that you are NOT in full communion with the Catholic Church - which you must be in order to receive. It’s a very serious matter:

1 Cor. 11:29
"For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks damnation on himself."

Reading is fundamental:
One question: When you go to the other churches, and they have communion, do you partake?
Vin, no I do not.

Reading is fundamental:
I don’t understand your point.
**I was hoping the Prodigalson12 wasn’t receiving the Holy Eucharist in the Catholic Church if he claims to be Catholic and Protestant. **
Nobody with that sort of confused theological outlook should.

I never accused him of receiving the symbolic “communion” at a Protestant service.

Reading IS fundamental . . .🤷

I had a good easter. A non demonational friend of mine and myself attended a service with a local church up the street here. It was a later service, so no biggie on interference with you who just can’t stand that I can still maintain my stance, as Catholic “yes, first and foremost”, and still fellowship with protestants. It didn’t replace mass, and no, I did not partake of their style of sacrament, I kind of stood out of the crowd there being the only one that did not, I did make it clear to a few of them my stance and they had no problems with it at all.

My local Catholic parish is going to need some major prodding by yours truly to get their doors open and to offer mass more often, especially during later hours and especially, making sure they keep their doors open for those of us that desire to simply walk in and pray. This is the parish I grew up with, it changed radically since they moved into that nice perfect “sterile” modern building, something was totally lost and I want that fire and community back, it’s time is due and I’m now in town again for good after 20+ years.

I had a good time, be it I wanted more meat and potatoes with the service, the community was warm and very welcoming, and here is something that’s going to floor some of you.

I spent some time at my grandmothers reading and discussing the gospel with her, I do that almost weekly, for nobody else is doing it and she’s a die hard Catholic, so it’s necessary and she totally enjoys it of course. She mentioned baking a cake because the family was going to meet at my cousins house for easter. I was not invited “of course”, and she asked if I was going to go anyway, I told her I had my reasons not to and left it at that. I spent a tremendous amount of money, faced a great deal of tribulation and have been almost shipwrecked just to move back into this area near my relatives after 20+ years, they all urging me on, as if I was going to be part of the family functions, but alas, you see how they are now.

She asked what I’m going to do for Easter dinner, I told her God will provide it. Well, that church I attended did just that. We had a great feast, these guys really, really know how to cook, the conversation during and afterwards was also good. I could not finish what was on my plate and since everybody else was finished eating, I took it home, heated it up later and had another great meal.

Now, while I was waiting in line to get a plate, low and behold, one of “my” espresso carts was right next to me against the wall. I built it a couple of years ago and didn’t know what happened to it, so, so nice to see my work right there and considering the very low volume nature of how I build, this is utterly flooring to have there.

Get this, they aren’t using it and someone mentioned they are wanting to sell it and I responded that it’s worth more now then it was before. This is partially because of the quality and low price I charge, and more so, I always give churches a discount. Just prior, I asked and thanked God for some extra income a bit earlier a few times, and now I may be able to have it through simply selling it for them, I’m only a few blocks away so can pick it up, crate and ship out and happen to hold the #2 position in yahoo for the keyword “espresso cart”…

After their service, we had a short break, then they had a play depicting Christs last moments, that was entertaining, and given that it’s a small parish, they really went above and beyond even with the limited resources they had on hand.

I’ll of course be hanging out there on a regular basis now, there are 7 days in the week guys, plenty of time for both Catholic and Protestant stuff you know. I hope this dispels the “accountability” argument…That Catholic church of mine is on the same exact street, so again, very much will be convenient, bottom line being, I’m home. I’m still going to hop to others regardless, there is always plenty to explore and I’m really enjoying it.

Catholic Sacrament, that again is cherished and the Catholic church is always 1st, know that, I use the Protestant term not with that same authority and especially context at all in regards to who I am, and in fact, it’s something between God and myself, absolutely not between myself and anybody outside, including those that are posting here, it’s unique., I can very much stand behind them, knowing full well and full respect for what they believe in and what they do, that’s never going to change. If I’m not PC enough, it’s your problem, not mine, all I know is my relationship with God and that alone, I refuse to get caught up in dogma or legalism and if I’m making some fractional mistake out of ignorance, so be it, my heart and mind is honestly focused in the right areas and where it counts, which alone is something we all struggle with regardless of denomination within the protestants and the Catholics as well.

I’ll backtrack the references and posts later as needed and rebut, for now, just having a happy easter, had a good time, found a place my friend is also going to frequent, for he has no parish at all, not even any form of denomination and yes, he has attended mass with me. I do like that suggestion earlier about inviting them to mass too, very good idea!!!

Happy Easter everybody, God is good!!!

I am sad that you felt that you had to explain some of these details on this thread. But if you hadn’t then you would have been asked by some posters (but not me!)

And that is one of the reasons that some people attend different churches, whether they are of the same demonination or not. Don’t think that that necessarily reflects badly on a particular church and may reflect what an individual needs for spritual growth at a particular time.

Sometimes think that some of the best discussions are with those who are two generations part. As a teen I really enjoyed discussions with a friend in his sixties who was reassessing his beliefs.

Being fed physically, emotionally and spiritually in the one setting - what more could you asked for?

Ain’t a problem for me and if it were that would be my problem nor yours.

Dear prodigalson12,
may God bless you on your journey.

I pray God guides you and you let no man lead you to their path.

people are quick to suggest ulterior motive like like they have here.

I guess it is a reflection of their own log in the eye.

I pray with Catholics, Pentecostals and Muslims at least weekly Mormons and others from time to time, people get into all kinds of slags the most common is covering all bases. It often seems people dont appreciate all of these desire relationship with My Father, who better to witness it? Jesus (pbwh) ministered to Pharisee, Saduces tax collectors and sinners.

Strange for me is our PP told us we should do this, little did he know God used him as a messenger to me, and i have acted with sincerity to this call.
The biggest irony for me is Catholics knock it the most and Catholic is close to the root of the call. We humans are so strange but in hind sight predictable.

You will be blessed to witness the beauty of Gods call relevant to this moment in this place the one eyes are blinded to.

You might like to see if u have the gift of prophecy, if you do this with your wide contact and its experience, your local parish would benefit of your help in planning outreach and faith development.

Keep it going Bro one day the prayer of unity will be answered in more than our eyes.

Thank you guys for the positive affirmations. I’m genuinely happy at the direction my life has taken, and more so, happy with myself, or more to the core, happy with the love I feel from God and I guess this is what they mean along what is described as Joy! I am still in no way perfect, I’m working at simply keeping God as the primary focus in my life, and more so, the primary focus of my heart, the utter simplicity of it all…

Anyway, moving forward here, going to delve more into the fruits the Catholic church has to offer, for I know, I still have much to learn there, and I’m still remaining happy to enjoy company with my Protestant brethren.

Also, just a little follow up along when I mentioned asking and thanking our blessed Father with the extra capitol. It has already started, I really don’t want to say too much into detail, I am just going to say Wow and a great big thank you, God is so Good!!!

you all believe in the same collection of ancient myths, so from my perspective there is no substantive difference between Catholics and Protestants (beyond the fact that the CC is a bigger church). Hey, I guess if you’re going to get into mythology might as well learn all angles of it right?

From the Catholics and their visions of Mary seemingly everywhere, to the Pentecostals who wrap snakes around their neck to prove their more Christian than the rest (and the funniest one … speak in bizarre tongues they claim is a compulsion from a mystical spiritual force), it all just seems very bizarre to me.

I guess if I were gonna pay homage to our national religion (if I were forced or something like that) I’d choose Episcopalian (the Jeffersonian version):D:D
