Why I like the Mass at my Parish

We often discuss liturgical abuse and the things we find annoying at our mass. Let’s discuss what we like about the mass at our respective parishes.

Be specific.

Let’s assume your favorite part of the mass is when you actually receive the Body and/or Precious blood.

Aside from that, what is your favorite part of the mass at your parish?

I’ll start:

There are two things that I really like about the mass I attend and they are not specific to my parish, but to the EF.

Favorite:
For some reason, I really like when the umm. – what do you call that server – incenses the congregation after he incenses the priest and servers. I like how we stand, he bows to us, we bow back, he incenses us, bows to us again and we bow back.

Bowing at the name of Jesus
I love how the servers listen intently for any mention of Jesus even during the homily and bow their heads slightly when they hear his name.

How awesome is that?

Ther third thing I like is this; A greeter stands at the back of the church on Sundays and hands out those little missalettes. That personal touch goes a long way in making people feel welcome.

Umm…this is hard…Our highly skilled pianist/organist wasn’t allowed to say no to the young kids who wanted to join the choir with their electric guitars got the great idea to let them play, but gets the sound guy to turn down their volume so low they can’t be heard.

My favorite part of Mass is the Consecration of the Mass. Love comes down. Need I say more?

I love it when our highly skilled liturgical musicians allow the children to sing and they do not hinder them from praising the Lord Jesus with songs of praise. I love it when they teach our teens to find joyful sounds to give praise to the lord, even when I or others may think the music in not pleasing to us…we are not the Lords of music so we don’t know his musical tastes, but our Lord Jesus said." hinder not the little ones, the least of these, from coming to me". I love my Parish for that…they accept me and my children in love, even though we are sinners and our music may not be perfect for all…it is pleasing to Jesus, his blessed Mother Mary, and the Holy Spirit in union with the Father and my parish

I have numerous, so bear with me, please :

1: after everyone has received who can/wants to, EVERYONE kneels.

2: during the above mentioned time, the choir will sing a song, usually in Latin or with quite a bit of it in Latin.

3: during the Christmas Mass this year, my Mom went with me; it was her late husband’s (my stepfather’s) parish, and so the older priest recognized her. You should know, she was raised Catholic and left the faith when she married my father (a Southern Baptist), and hasn’t been to Mass, other than the aforementioned Christmas Mass, since my stepfather died. My mother, who didn’t go to Confession prior, went up with her arms crossed for a blessing during Communion. She happened to be in the line of the priest who remembered her. Instead of making a sign of the cross on her forehead, as he had done to everyone else who came up for a blessing, he thumped her on the head. (he and my stepfather were good friends, I’ve heard).

4: the pastor reminds us every week that the Eucharist is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord.

5: Sundays, after everyone has received, and the priest celebrant is finished cleaning up (is there a better word?), we pray the Anima Christi.

6: on weekdays, instead of the Anima Christi, we sing O Salutaris Hostia.

Fr. Z. wrote, that the Traditional Mass is vertical, point to God, the new form is horizontal, emphasizes the participation of people.

The Mass what I attend is the union of both, which is the cross: horizontal and vertical.

The music is the traditional Gregorian, in Latin, people sing together the Ordinary, the propers are sung by the cantrix and a small choir. The prayers are in Enlish. People pray together the Confiteor (and the new form w/o repetitions and emphasizing that at least half of the sins are omission is better than the old), listen to the collect, the readings, the Gospel , answers the prayers of the faithful, and listen to the Eucharistic prayer (which is always the Roman Canon showing that nothing is changed, the liturgy is the same).

I am grateful to God, that I found the perfect Mass at the St John Cantius fathers. This will be the future, the union of the horizontal and vertical, the symbol of the cross.

I love my parish for so many many reasons, here’s a few:

We are a cathedral parish
Bishop usually uses gorgeous old vestments (Like some of these)
Out of our 5 english or latin speaking Sunday Masses, incence is used at 3 of them.
Many large families

At the “main” Mass:

We have an average of 15 servers, doing everything from thurifer, vimpa, candlebearer, etc…
We have a world class organist
Our choir director has multiple PHDs, and our choir is one of the best in the area

That’s just a few things I love about my parish.
