Don Johnson:

Conservative American Christians like to portray themselves as defenders of religious liberty and freedom of speech. You often hear them mocking liberal “snowflakes” for trying to shut down discussions, silence dissenting perspectives, and be overly uniform in their hiring practices. However, it seems that there is at least one topic that conservatives are happy to censor, as I recently experienced.

On Monday, June 24th, 2019, I filled in as host of The Patrick Madrid Show on Relevant Radio, the first of what was scheduled to be three guest spots that week. The program started without any problems. In the first hour I offered a review of Toy Story 4, critiqued a popular approach to interpreting scripture, and shared a story I found inspiring about a theme park worker in Florida.

Then I started covering the topic that would keep the episode from getting re-aired or released as a podcast, and end my relationship with Relevant Radio: the congressional hearing held a few days before on whether to convene a commission to study the legacy of slavery in America.

During that segment we played a few clips from some of the speakers at the hearing and I tried to give a brief overview of the argument in favor of establishing that commission, an argument that largely consists of simply doing a quick American history lesson. In this I relied heavily on the articles and speeches of Ta-Nehisi Coates, as well as notes I have taken from several other scholars on the effects of systemic racism in our culture.

At this point I honestly thought that the show was going great. I could see on the call screen that the phone lines were completely jammed, and I could tell from the screener notes that most of them disagreed with Mr. Coates, but as a radio host that has never bothered me. Indeed, a bit of back and forth is what makes for good radio. I took some dissenting calls and had what I thought was a reasonable, fair-minded discussion with each caller. Interestingly, I also took a couple of calls that were very positive about my take on the subject, including one from an African American man who marveled that he had never heard a Christian white person explain and clearly offer support for his perspective, especially on the radio.

It was during that call that I received a message from the producer that we were going to have to switch topics. I continued with my caller until the break, at which time all the rest of the phone bank was dumped and I was told that I had to find something “safer” to talk about. I don’t remember much about the final half hour of the show, as I was in a bit of a daze over the decision, other than that I ended the program with a monologue about the danger of choosing comfort and safety over the teachings of Jesus.

After the show Relevant Radio and I quickly and mutually agreed that I would not be doing any more hosting for them.

I have no idea about why this radio station does anything. I never listened to it. I stopped reading when Coates was mentioned. He’s nothing but a grievance mongering, pompous, overrated windbag.

I know nothing about this radio station, having never listened to it. (I have enough to handle by being an active member of CAF!) However, the writer makes some good points and in a civil tongue, which is an oddity nowadays.

Didn’t somebody already post this weeks ago?

I remember responding to the thread at that time that I never bother with Relevant Radio except to pick up their holy card adverts that they leave at churches, because who doesn’t love a nice holy card?

The last thing I need is another talk station full of lay people discussing politics and race. Ho hum. I much prefer WAOB which is full of priests, bishops, scripture and prayers.

While I dont listen to relevant radio the author comes off as a spoiled brat. When guided by radio experts they quickly thought they did nothing unwise or wrong. The author most certainly did not come to a mutual agreement but rather is unwelcome back to the station. Very unprofessional by the author.

A similar posting by same author on July 15th, thread closed under normal circumstances.

Here is the topic that got me removed from Relevant Radio - Don Johnson Popular Media
Don’s New Documentary A Compromised Faith Many find it shocking that white conservative evangelicals have supported Donald Trump so strongly, especially considering his almost complete lack of the traditional “family values” they claim to esteem. However, the fact is that Donald Trump espouses and exemplifies at least one principle that this segment of American Christianity has long prioritized over the teachings of Jesus: white supremacy. This is that story. That is what thi…
I think it should be pointed out if we are close to just reposting the same story. I guess, it’s one’s right. It’s one’s right as well to point this out.

Thanks for that, Victoria, I knew this has been posted before but didn’t realize it was by the same poster. This is basically a duplicate thread then, which is not allowed.

I am in Cali and relevant radio use to be immaculate heart radio here. I loved it back then… I would get off work at 3:00 (if I was not working OT) and Bam, Catholic answers was on. Immaculate heart seemed to be really more focused on apologetics. Relevant radio seems more focused on politics. It lost Catholic answers, Lost the Terry and Jesse show, Mother Mariam… It’s best programs. The only person I can even think of by name from relevant radio now is Patrick Madrid, maybe Joe Socorra? (Spelling) but I never liked his program to begin with.

I was very dissapointed when immaculate heart radio made the switch. The quality went down so much that I only listen now when I just really do not want music on my radio but I don’t want silence either.

Oh dear. Well, follow the money.
I guess the broadcaster hit on something where the supporters of relevant radio were threatening to close up their pocketbooks. Surprise!

That, or the guest host has the mistaken notion that relevant radio encourages race baiting for ratings instead of a more calm approach and the guest host thinks that they own the radio station and should have sole (name removed by moderator)ut of content and have to answer to no one.

A pretty rude guest if you ask me.

So which radio station is willing to have a non-biased open discussion about this topic?

Non-biased? Hard to say. I feel like “old” NPR might have been able to, but now they’ve really drunk the kool-aid, so…

Did you listen to the broadcast? Do you know it was race-baiting, as opposed to calm? The broadcaster states that some callers and he had a good discussion.

The other people producing the show disagreed. I suppose they are protecting the actual host and the brand.

Disagreed with what, specifically? Protecting the host, and brand against what, specifically? The anger of rich donors, or what?

"This was their reply: “We’re not giving a reason as to why the show was pulled. We’ve had a couple of calls asking for it, and our response is, “I’m sorry, that show isn’t available.”

Sounds like some whining to me. That and some ignorance of the radio industry by the author. I’m not familiar with the author, have you heard them speak?

I’m not familiar with the author. I think he raises some interesting questions. You just speak so authoritatively, I figured you knew more about the broadcast in question. But… you don’t?
Do you consider Catholic radio to be just another part of the “radio industry”? Because I would think the aims, methods etc. are quite different from the rest of the secular mainstream commercial radio.
Do you think it is censorship on the part of Relevant Radio, if they usually release recordings / podcasts, but won’t release one of this particular episode?
