Why, if Jesus' sacrifice is a past event, is Jesus still considered a priest?

First of all, when did Jesus Christ become “a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek”?

Hebrews 5:5-6 says that he became this high priest when God said to him: You are my son, this day I have begotten you." The apostle Paul states that Ps.2:7 was proclaimed when God raised Jesus up.(Acts 13:33).This is when his soul was not abandoned in Sheol, but as Peter said, "God raised him up, releasing him from the throes (literally birth pangs) of death. (Acts 2:24) One can find this expression in Psalm 116:3, Ps.18:6, and Hosea 13:14. (Not to mention several early Church Fathers).

So, the soul of Jesus Christ suffered the death of our sins in Sheol, and was begotten by the Father from such a death unspeakable. Knowing that, and knowing that 'the soul (life) of the flesh is, or is as the blood" we can understand the meaning of Hebrews 12:24-25
“…and Jesus**,the mediator of a new covenant**,and the sprinkled blood that speaks more eloquently than that of Abel. See that you do not reject the one who speaks.”

One must know about the scripture of Abel’s blood to understand these two verses. Gen.4:10 “What have you done! Listen: Your brother’s blood (soul) cries out to me from the ground!”

Thus, the voice of our mediator, our high priest is the one who continually intercedes for us as the Lamb that was slain, but is now alive. He is continually acting as our advocate against our adversary, ha satan. “For the accuser of our brothers is cast out, who accuses them before our God day and night. They conquered him **by the blood of the Lamb **and by the word of their testimony; love for life did not deter them from death.” (Rev.12:10-11)

This is the understanding that I have regarding your question.

The JW’s use your same logic to interpret scripture and put forth their false doctrines also. Your logic is, it’s not what it says it’s what we say it says. Jesus’ priesthood is after the order of Melchizedek the perfect heavenly priesthood not the fleshly imperfect Aaronic priesthood. They follow different orders because of who they are. You are trying to put fleshly rules on a Divine being. You just can’t do it.

Is there any scriptural evidence to support your claims?

The last supper was a Passover Seder. In Hebrew it is called a moed a dress rehearsal for a future event. Jesus was revealing that from the institution of the Passover it was always Him present there. Communion is a continuance of the Passover Seder. The only thing that is different is that Jesus is now identified with the matzoth and wine. Jesus said “do this in remembrance of Me” It is a memorial according to the words of Jesus.

And I find yours more offensive because you apparently do not understand the Mass. It is a memorial according to the words of Jesus? Then where did the memorial say to use grape juice and crackers as so many non-Catholics?

The validity and spiritual value of the holy Eucharist is only tangentally related to the eternal priesthood of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is not required to offer any other sacrifices in order to be the mediator and high priest of the new covenant.

As the one who died the death of our sins, and was raised from sheol and the grave, he is the eternal mediator/high priest before our heavenly Father.

He mediates mercy and forgiveness to those who believe him to be ‘the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.’

He is our advocate high priest who advocates mercy towards those who believe in him against the continual accusations of Satan. This accuser is continually accusing God for being unjust in not punishing us according to our past or even present sins. As our advocate, he is defending us before God, the righteous judge, as being the Lamb of God who took our past and present sins, and our punishment upon himself.

On the other hand, the holy Eucharist administered by His priests, is the spiritual food of our Lord Jesus Christ who enables us to overcome sin, and thereby the death of sin. It is the means by which we are reminded to die to one self unto the will of God the Father. It becomes our daily bread by which His will is done on earth as it is in heaven. It is a principal means by which we approach our High Priest in faith and obedience.

For many Protestants, holy scriptures are their spiritual food,’ for man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." If only Catholics understood the necessity of this spiritual food, and if only Protestants understood the necessity of the holy Eucharist. For the humble of heart, the Spirit of God enlivens the Word of God within them. Likewise, the Spirit of God enlivens the holy Eucharist of our Lord Jesus Christ within the soul who is humble before God.
