Why is “Christian” Music so Awful?

I would disagree with you on this one. i can think of a large number of CCM songs which are based on Scriptural passages. Prime example is Better Is One Day by Matt Redman which is based on a psalm.

Devotional music is often based on scriptures. That’s NOT what makes the difference between liturgical music and devotional music.
 
Can someone please explain to me this idea that somehow, using expressions of personal fiath in a song makes it ‘bad’? What’s wrong with writing a song about how you feel about God?

Nothing, as long as you know it’s a devotional song and not a liturgical one.

There’s nothing wrong with devotional songs. They can help with your daily walk and they can even be a kind of personal prayer used privately or in small groups. They’re not appropriate for Mass though.

I’ve seen some people on this thread get their jilbabs in a twist about the use of personal expressions of faith in songs. I can’t understand why…

Problem is that from what I can tell, there isn’t a distinction made between liturgical and devotional music in this thread, certainly not by the people making the fuss in the first place…

That’s because it’s not on the radar for many Catholics. Either they thing EVERYTHING is liturgical music or they think nothing is but 500 year old hymns. There is no real thought given to it at all by most Catholics.

There are some very traditional songs/hymms out there that I swear if I ever have to do again I will stick a fork in my eye. I will say the same thing about CCM. Nearly every time I do music for a funeral I am asked to do “On Eagles Wings”, or “Amazing Grace” or “How Great Thout Art”. I cannot tell you how sick I am of these, but for the family’s sake we do them anyway, if requested. My point is that music means a lot of different things to different people and as long as it helps someone draw closer to God then it is “good music”. If I had my way we would just go back to Chant. I never get tired of it.

To heck with the insipid stuff. I want bagpipes at mine. But just before and after, not inside the church building. There I want a little music and I want it pretty plain, and certainly not “On eagles’ wings.” Gag.

And then again, I probably won’t care, being dead and all. :cool:

Maybe it’s because I’ve come from a Baptist background where the music for services was a mix of old and new stuff, traditional hymns and CCM songs.
 
hmm, recently I have started to listen to some music that I thought was pretty good, which turned out to be christian bands, skillet, Demon Hunter, thousand foot krutch etc,

hahaha, but I have also listened to bands like Iron maiden and metallica since I was in high school, which was not that long ago.

Oh, you meant “a particular set of sub-genres of recent and contemporary evangelical popular music”?

Even that isn’t all bad. Most of anything at any time is of pretty poor quality.
