I have heard people talking about the importance of three. Can someone explain why this time is important?

45 From noon on, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 46 And about three o’clock Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47 When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, “This man is calling for Elijah.” 48 At once one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink. 49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” 50 Then Jesus cried again with a loud voice and breathed his last. (Matthew 27:45-50 NRSVCE; also see Mark 15:33-37; Luke 23:44-46)

The number 3 seems to have some importance as it is considered a “perfect” number. GOD is both 1 and 3.
Jesus died at 3 pm and on and on.
Some people go overboard on this and even a “science” has sprung from it. It is called “numerology”.
Peace!!

If you follow the “numerology” you will find a whole gamut of “perfect numbers” according to this or that explanation.
People like to attribute “magical properties” to these types of numbers and here is where I leave that bandwagon.
Superstition should have no part in the life of the faithful. Just my 2 cents.
Peace!!

You have to apply numerology within its context! Here we’re talking Biblical numerology, Hebrew numerology, not to be confused with today’s divination, angel numbers, birth dates, fortune telling etc… Hebrew numerology was used to interpret/ describe the actions and attributes of God and to communicate in speech and in writing.
  1. Twos, for example, are associated with valid testimony, as when Jesus introduces a doctrine in John’s Gospel with “truly, truly, I say…” many places in the Psalms the same thought is expressed in two different ways in the same verse.
  2. Three is associated with holiness, perfection, and completness, hence it is associated with God, or, when teamed with 6, six which stands for man or evil, as in 666, it indicates completely human or completely evil!! And in another connection, at 3:00 PM on Good Friday, Jesus said; “It is finished!” It is completed! and then he died.
  3. Seven indicates total perfection, therefore, since only one is total perfection, the number seven speaks of God!

Jesus told St. Faustina, that it was the hour of great mercy, because it is the hour He died on the Cross. It is a good practice to immerse yourself in His mercy at that time, and perhaps pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.

Before clocks were invented the time was referred to as the ninth hour.

Yep, Thomas, 3 and 7 carry a meaningful of completeness, holiness, perfection, context will give meaning.
