I am currently engaged to be married. In deciding our wedding plans, I find myself really wanting to be married in the Catholic Church. I was raised Catholic, was married in the Church during my first marriage (am now widowed…cancer), and view it as the only “real” church out there. Since my wife died just shy of 9 years ago, I rarely go to mass. I had a “parting of the ways” with my faith and the church. However, a LOT of soul searching followed those years and I realize that I have an incredibly strong faith…if not Knowledge…of His existence (llong story).
All that said, everytime I attend mass, l can’t help but be quite bothered by the people I see there who are quite active in the church, who are there for the most part of show (at least that is how I have been led to believe), and the one-upsmanship that goes on there throughout the churches in this area. I’m not casting stones at anybody here, please don’t take it that way. However, I feel “closer to God” when I just spend quiet time praying, or meditating, or talking my problems out loud to Him when walking around outdoors, etc.
All this would lead to the conclusion that “just any old Christian church” would do the trick for somebody like me. However, it doesn’t work that way for me, and quite frankly I can’t put a finger on it as to why. I don’t really see marriages outside of the Catholic Church to be “the same”, though again, I can’t figure out “why” I see things this way. I don’t denounce those other marriages, heck, I have quite a few friends married in the Lutheran church, or Methodist Church, etc. who have strong marriages (at least from what I can tell), and they have great kids, great hearts, etc.
I am engaged to a woman who is divorced, was married LDS, and was raised outside of any church, though her family claims it is “Methodist”, but it doesn’t seem that she was ever baptized (which we are looking into). She was never LDS, but her ex-husband was, hence the marriage in that “church”.
So, now we come to the point where we are planning marriage. It is important to me to be married in a Catholic Church-Recognized marriage. But, when asked why it is important to me for reasons other than “window dressing”, I can’t quite figure out why it is so important to me. I’ve been weighing on this for several days now, and over that time, it seems to have become more and more important to me…but that makes it even more frustrating when I can’t put a finger on just “why” it is a big deal to me.
Please point me in the direction of a place to look for assistance in getting to the bottom of this. Thank you in advance for any help.
