Because they’re poorly educated on the Church and it’s teachings.

“There are not one hundred people in the United States who hate The Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they wrongly perceive the Catholic Church to be.”
― Fulton J. Sheen

Do you know the difference between a cult and a religion?

about a 1000 years.

Cult is just a derogatory term used to denigrate a religion a person might find strange and illogical.

It is a cult, as are all religions.

The word cult simply means a system of religious worship or a group of adherents to a particular religion.

When people say Catholicism is a cult, and use it derogatorily, they are unaware of what the word actually means.

They are using it to mean a false religion or a group of people brainwashed by a leader (like Jim Jones, David Koresh, etc).

Cults generally take things to an extreme and use techniques like “love bombing” to gain recruits. All religions share some aspects with a cult, but that does not make them one. Here’s a link to Catholic thoughts on the phenomenon of cults.

I haven’t read the whole thing, but it seems legit.

I remember being taught in Sunday school at our non-denominational, yet baptist leaning, church, that Catholicism is the world’s largest cult.

I tend to think some people are ignorant and don’t to read and learn for themselves what the catholic faith is about.

I known a few people that think the catholic faith is a cult, but trying to talk them is like trying to talk to a brick wall.

CULT
  1. a specific system of religious worship, esp with reference to its rites and deity
  2. a sect devoted to such a system
  3. a quasi-religious organization using devious psychological techniques to gain and control adherents
  4. sociol a group having an exclusive ideology and ritual practices centred on sacred symbols, esp one characterized by lack of organizational structure
  5. intense interest in and devotion to a person, idea, or activity: the cult of yoga
  6. the person, idea, etc, arousing such devotion
  7. a. something regarded as fashionable or significant by a particular group
    b. ( as modifier ): a cult show
  8. ( modifier ) of, relating to, or characteristic of a cult or cults: a cult figure
I guess if you identify yourself as a Christian you can be accused of being in a cult. 🙂

The worship leader in that church once said between songs that if you look up cult in the dictionary we probably fit the description. Despite the definition, cult has become a derogatory term.

The only people I’ve heard call the Church a cult are hard core anti Catholics, many of whom were actually ex Catholics on a life long drama over Catholicism.

Etymology

cult
1610s, “worship,” also “a particular form of worship,” from Fr. culte (17c.), from L. cultus “care, labor; cultivation, culture; worship, reverence,” originally “tended, cultivated,” pp. of colere “to till” (see colony). Rare after 17c.; revived mid-19c. with reference to ancient or primitive rituals. Meaning “devotion to a person or thing” is from 1829.

Cult. An organized group of people, religious or not, with whom you disagree. [Rawson]

FWIW, “colere” is also the Latin word we have to “venerate” Mary.

Why are you asking us? Ask the “some people” who think that way!

As a former Baptist I can shed some light on that. I was taught that any faith that worshipped a false god was a cult. Baptists wrongly believe that Catholics worship Mary, saints, statues, the pope, and wafers. Therefore, in Baptist logic, Catholics are a cult because they worship all these false gods.
