Why is cussing wrong?

Using God’s name in vain is sinful according to the Ten Commandments. The other words were used in common language in the past but are now considered vulgar.

There is nothing inherently sinful about saying “poop” or other forms of the same. Though s*** is considered vulgar, it is another word for poop that used to be commonly used. The English martyr, St Thomas More, used s*** a lot. 😃

Here is one quote from St Thomas More’s Responsio ad Lutherum which I have censored for the forum:
But meanwhile, for as long as your reverend paternity will be determined to tell these shameless lies, others will be permitted, on behalf of his English majesty, to throw back into your paternity’s ****ty mouth, truly the ****-pool of all ****, all the muck and **** which your damnable rottenness has vomited up, and to empty out all the sewers and privies onto your crown divested of the dignity of the priestly crown, against which no less than against the kingly crown you have determined to play the buffoon.

[To the Moderators: I assume that the above quote does not break any rules since it is censored and is a quote of a great saint and martyr but if it does please delete it and forgive me.]

It is always sinful to use God’s name in vain. The Second Commandment in the Bible condemns it:
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
Thank you for the explanation:). Its was indeed a common word to say during Thomas More’s time, as the gentleman on the EWTN live episode mentioned, but it was especially a common thing to do when people were engaging in very painstaking discussions, because people’s soul were in jeopardy, and it was not a light issue. A very interesting history lesson:D.

But I know religiously (pun intended) that using God’s name as a cuss word is always sinful, since its against the 2nd commandment. In fact, while Father Corapi was going offer the 2nd commandment in front of an audience, he humoressly stated “You know, I could hang out with a bunch of bikers, where they use horrible language, and it wouldn’t bother me, BUT DON’T TAKE THE LORD’S NAME IN VAIN!!! That crosses the line my friend.”

Amen! 👍

Cussing starts in the mind and then goes to our lips. If you’re trying to stop (which you should), start by not uttering those words subvocally. Truthfully I find it disgusting and vulgar, and I’ve avoided many people for this reason (including some people who turned out to be arsonists). The general rule is that if the Virgin Mother would walk away from it, then you should too. Thank God I have a great mother who taught me. 😃

I never take God’s name in vain, but I don’t see anything wrong with other words. If I stub my toe and say, “Oh, s#*t, that hurt.” I don’t consider that a sin at all.

I slip and cuss quite frequently and it isn’t a good thing. God tells us we will give account for every vain word we speak. Cussing is harmful to ourselves and to others. We are not to be ruled by anything other than God; and that includes our own anger, pain, and esp. our own tongues. As for others, cussing can be really insulting to our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, and/or could also put out a stumbling block by making it seem ok to use foul language.

This is a problem I do struggle with, and it isn’t easy.
