Why is evangelization necessary?

I know that the Church teaches that non-baptized members of other religions can receive salvation; the idea, as I understand it, is that those who sincerely act on what they believe to be good and true have expressed an implicit desire for unity with Christ (Who is, after all, Goodness and Truth incarnate).

But if this is true, then why is the Church so adament on the necessity of preaching the Gospel to non-believers? Why do we have so many martyrs who gave their very lives in order to spread the Faith, if those they preached to could have been saved without their preaching? I was hoping you could clear up this apparent contradiction for me.
