I understand morality and I understand loving your neighbor and I understand the golden rule. But I don’t understand faith. I know that faith can lead some people to do good things, but why is faith in of itself necessary?

For instance:

Why should it make a difference whether you have faith in God or not if it doesn’t effect the way you love your neighbor?

Why is it important that I actually believe that somebody is listening to my prayer and that my prayer is answered?

Why is it necessary to have faith that God will provide instead of believing that I’m in control of my own life?

Why did Jesus rebuke Peter for having little faith when walking on water? (It’s basic human understanding of the world that you can’t walk on water. Why must Peter suspend his understanding of reality to please God?)

Why is it necessary that I have faith that something as obscure and utterly confusing and meaningless to me is the filoque is correct?

Why should it make a difference whether you have faith in God or not if it doesn’t effect the way you love your neighbor?

Actually it does.

Why is it important that I actually believe that somebody is listening to my prayer and that my prayer is answered?

Because it’s true

Why is it necessary to have faith that God will provide instead of believing that I’m in control of my own life?

Because no sane person believes they have all the answers.

Why did Jesus rebuke Peter for having little faith when walking on water? (It’s basic human understanding of the world that you can’t walk on water. Why must Peter suspend his understanding of reality to please God?)

Because GOD is the ultimate reality.

Why is it necessary that I have faith that something as obscure and utterly confusing and meaningless to me is the filoque is correct?

And now we reach the real problem. Reality does not revolve around you, truth is truth no matter what.

Why should it make a difference whether you have faith in God or not if it doesn’t effect the way you love your neighbor?
God made us for Himself. Without God we can do nothing. And that includes loving our neighbor. If it wasn’t for God’s grace you would not be able to love your neighbor.

If you say that you love your neighbor without the help of God then you are being self-centered, arrogant, egotistical & full of pride. I know, harsh words right? But that is the truth. And I can imagine that it is not your intent to be any of those things. But once you know that if it not for God’s grace you cannot love your neighbor, and you still refuse to believe that you can do it all on your own, then it would seem that your intention is to be prideful.

Lucifer’s fall was due to his pride and his wanting to not serve God.
Why is it important that I actually believe that somebody is listening to my prayer and that my prayer is answered?
Believing in prayer and believing that someone out there is hearing and answering our prayers gives us hope for something that is beyond this world, literally beyond this world and into God’s Kingdom.
Why is it necessary to have faith that God will provide instead of believing that I’m in control of my own life?
That would be arrogant of you to think that you are in control. That would be like saying that you created yourself and therefore are in control.

There is an Absolute Simplicity that is the full Truth which is God. He created you for Himself. He imprinted in our hearts His law & His love. When you feel a twinge of guilt for doing something that you think is wrong, that is God’s law imprinted in your heart. That is God’s grace. That is the Holy Spirit nudging at your heart to stop whatever it is you’re doing and to do the right thing.
Why did Jesus rebuke Peter for having little faith when walking on water? (It’s basic human understanding of the world that you can’t walk on water. Why must Peter suspend his understanding of reality to please God?)
Jesus Christ, who is God, walked on water. With full faith in Jesus Christ, Peter could’ve walked on water. He started to walk on water but then he took his eyes off Jesus and that’s when Peter started to sink.

If we take our eyes off Jesus, we will sink to a place we do not want to go. It’s a good thing that Jesus is merciful and gives us chance after chance. He does this because he knows we are weak and sinful. Jesus Christ is so full of mercy. He loves us so much. He does not want to lose one soul but unfortunately we have many people who do take their eye off Jesus and no longer trust in His mercy. For those who do not trust in the mercy of Jesus Christ, there is no return. But it’s so easy to trust in Him. Jesus gives it to us freely. We just have to accept it and trust in His mercy.
Why is it necessary that I have faith that something as obscure and utterly confusing and meaningless to me is the filoque is correct?
You mean Filioque correct? The Holy Spirit? God’s breath is the Holy Spirit. That is how He created us so that we can actually live & breathe. So you see, that is why you cannot say that you are living & breathing all on your own and that you are in control. That is not true.

And if you’re confused, God does not expect us to understand everything. We just need to have faith. That is what faith means, believing in something or someone we do not necessarily understand.

Without faith we cannot please God. We don’t have to understand God in order to please Him. And the only way to God is through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ who died for our sins so that we can love & serve God and be with Him forever.

If we both went into a job interview and got turned down, you might say that God is watching you and has a plan and he purposely made you get turned down from this job for a reason. Your profile states you are Catholic. That’s hard to believe when you ask questions like that. Have you had absolutely no education in the Catholic faith? How old are you?
Have you read the CCC and the Bible?

Please don’t demean me. I am very familiar with the Catholic faith and am familiar with the Bible and CCC.

Okay then if you are very familiar with the Catholic faith why such questions. You should already know the answers. The CCC has clear explanations on faith.

Here is an online CCC which I’ve set at the sections on Faith for you.

The CCC does not provide clear answers to questions like those that I asked.

Sinner,

You lack the necessary humility to understand. To try to be in control of your environment is the sin of Adam and Eve. It is the ultimate lie, because we are not. If you do not get the job, you are not meant to be there. There is a whole slew of variations that would have led up to that moment that you know nothing about.

Again, like so many others, you look for answers out here. You should be asking God to show you Himself. Open yourself to interior movements of the Spirit (who is in you, due to your baptism, though you choose to ignore HIm). The answer is inside yourself.

We are such a practical culture. You have been inculturated into believing you are the end all of all existence. This is why people are shooting themselves during this stressful time. Their entire life has been built around their belief that money and “image” is the end all of everything, and when that is taken away, despair sets in. This is why the poor In Africa and Asia are so much wiser than us. God is active in them because they are stripped from the falsehoods our culture has given us.

Learn to see with the eyes of faith, not the world.

Can you provide a citation to backup this claim? This seems to go completely against free will.

Can you please stick to answering the question instead of judging me based on false assumptions?

Sorry I have made you uncomfortable.

Read Genesis chapter 3. Eve was not content with being a child of God. She was tempted into believing she could confer upon herself powers that belonged to God.

Last night, I sat at the bedside of a dying man. He was all of 41. His wife had died three years ago, almost to the same day. He did not know he had cancer until two months ago, and neither did his doctor. The pain he was having, he was told, was “all in your head”.

He wanted me to have the doctor give him something on her birthday so that he could go to be with her. He knew he could not control dying, but wanted to control the day and time. He was a 33rd degree Mason, and yet, his Masonry could not help him. I told him God is the Boss. Ask HIm.

A friend, who was there, had lost her husband. He went to one of those alternative practitioners, with the yoga and the crystals, and such. He still died.

When we are young, we think we are invincible. This is why you see the old timers in Church. They have lived long enough to know better. I pray you do too. :hug1:

Why should it make a difference whether you have faith in God or not if it doesn’t effect the way you love your neighbor?
My answer is two-fold: 1) Who says it doesn’t effect the way you love your neighbor? 2) As creatures of our Creator, our purpose in life is to give glory to God. The two greatest commandments are not only to love our neighbor, but first to love God with all our heart, mind, and strength.

Sure, having no faith doesn’t mean a person *won’t *love their neighbor, but then again, I think it’s safe to say you won’t find an atheist living their life like Mother Teresa.
In other words, having no faith doesn’t necessarily lead to immorality, because all humans being creatures of God have Divine Law in their hearts; howver, whether we recognize it or not, humans have not only a material body but a supernatural soul. That soul needs the exercise of faith to grow close to God and be in union with Him, which is how we gain eternal life.
Why is it important that I actually believe that somebody is listening to my prayer and that my prayer is answered?
It’s only important if you believe in God. Prayer is communication with God, union with God. If you don’t believe in God, then there’s no point in prayer. Petitions are just a part of prayer – it’s always good to let God know what our wants and needs are, but prayer is more than petitions. It should also consist of praising God for His awesomeness, giving thanks to God for our blessings, and offering contrition to God for our sins.
Why is it necessary to have faith that God will provide instead of believing that I’m in control of my own life?
Well, you can believe you are in control of your own life, but it’s obvious we are not. Life happens, that we have no control over. That idea is not that God is micro-managing everything; the idea is that whatever happens to us, good or bad, we should turn to God for living our lives in accordance with His will. We believe that God loves each one of us, so we trust that He will take care of us. That is why we pray, “Jesus, I trust in You.” We are saying “Jesus, I trust in You that You will take care of me.”
Why did Jesus rebuke Peter for having little faith when walking on water? (It’s basic human understanding of the world that you can’t walk on water. Why must Peter suspend his understanding of reality to please God?)
Jesus wanted Peter to realize that Jesus was no ordinary human that can’t walk on water. Jesus wanted Peter to realize that He, Jesus, is God and that with God, anything is possible.
Why is it necessary that I have faith that something as obscure and utterly confusing and meaningless to me is the filoque is correct?
Doctrine may seem to be meaningless to your everyday life, but it has to do with Truth. We need to work on increasing our understanding of Truth, which is God, upon which and for Whom we live our lives.

There are many people in the world that don’t believe in a god. Even more don’t believe in the Christian God. And even more don’t actually have faith in the Christian God. Do you really think that all these people really doing good out of pride? Your thoughts seem rather gnostic.
God is absolute truth. The truth is not subjective. Just because someone does not believe in God does not mean that God does not exist. God is our creator no matter if someone believes or not. All atheists, buddhists, hindus, agnostics are still motivated by God, whether they believe or not.

And to answer your question about the pride… buddhists are not prideful. They believe in something. They believe in the teachings of “Buddha” to achieve what they need to achieve. That is not pride. They rely on something other than themselves. That’s not to say that God will absolutely refuse them just because they are not Christian. They just don’t know. It is up to us to enlighten them to the Truths of God and Jesus Christ. We do not know their hearts so we cannot say where they will end up. We can try via forums such as this to enlighten them with the Truth of Jesus Christ and pray. We need to pray for them, big time.
I don’t understand why hope is necessary.
Hope is huge. We are in need of hope right now. And I don’t mean “worldly hope” I mean a theological hope. A hope that we have for the Kingdom of God so that we can be with Him forever.

Hope

1817
Hope is the theological virtue by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ’s promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit. “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.” “The Holy Spirit . . . he poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life.”

1818 The virtue of hope responds to the aspiration to happiness which God has placed in the heart of every man; it takes up the hopes that inspire men’s activities and purifies them so as to order them to the Kingdom of heaven; it keeps man from discouragement; it sustains him during times of abandonment; it opens up his heart in expectation of eternal beatitude. Buoyed up by hope, he is preserved from selfishness and led to the happiness that flows from charity.

1819 Christian hope takes up and fulfills the hope of the chosen people which has its origin and model in the hope of Abraham, who was blessed abundantly by the promises of God fulfilled in Isaac, and who was purified by the test of the sacrifice. “Hoping against hope, he believed, and thus became the father of many nations.”

1820 Christian hope unfolds from the beginning of Jesus’ preaching in the proclamation of the beatitudes. The beatitudes raise our hope toward heaven as the new Promised Land; they trace the path that leads through the trials that await the disciples of Jesus. But through the merits of Jesus Christ and of his Passion, God keeps us in the “hope that does not disappoint.” Hope is the “sure and steadfast anchor of the soul . . . that enters . . . where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf.” Hope is also a weapon that protects us in the struggle of salvation: “Let us . . . put on the breastplate of faith and charity, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.” It affords us joy even under trial: “Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation.” Hope is expressed and nourished in prayer, especially in the Our Father, the summary of everything that hope leads us to desire.

1821 We can therefore hope in the glory of heaven promised by God to those who love him and do his will. In every circumstance, each one of us should hope, with the grace of God, to persevere “to the end” and to obtain the joy of heaven, as God’s eternal reward for the good works accomplished with the grace of Christ. In hope, the Church prays for “all men to be saved.” She longs to be united with Christ, her Bridegroom, in the glory of heaven:

Hope, O my soul, hope. You know neither the day nor the hour. Watch carefully, for everything passes quickly, even though your impatience makes doubtful what is certain, and turns a very short time into a long one. Dream that the more you struggle, the more you prove the love that you bear your God, and the more you will rejoice one day with your Beloved, in a happiness and rapture that can never end.

Why is it arrogant to think that I’m in control?
Did you create yourself? No. So why would you think that you are in control? I think you’re talking about free will. Many people misunderstand free will.
If we both went into a job interview and got turned down, you might say that God is watching you and has a plan and he purposely made you get turned down from this job for a reason.
The first part of this post is true. But I don’t believe that God purposely made me get turned down. I wouldn’t put it quite like that. I have the responsibility to do research on the company where I want to work. I have the responsibility to brush up on my interviewing skills. I need to work on my approach with the interviewer. I also can’t be stupid enough to interview for a position where I clearly know that I do not have the skills for such a position. That would be arrogant of me. And I do believe certain things happen for a reason. That’s God for you.
I would say I got turned down because of my qualifications, poor interviewing skills, or that the interviewer just didn’t like me.
I agree. This is what I would think. But I would also think that God has a plan for me. It’s not either, or, it could be both, and. Why can’t you believe that it could be both? The poor skills and that God has a plan for you?
What is wrong with thinking I’m in control of my own actions?
You are responsible for your own actions but if not for God you won’t be able to do those actions. Therefore God is in control. He’s the one that gave you life. Without God you can do NOTHING. Even if you do not do God’s Will, it is still God that is allowing you to move about.
But anybody would be nervous walking on water. Why is it so bad that Peter took his eyes off of Jesus and thought to himself “How is this happening? I shouldn’t be able to walk on water.”
I never attempted to walk on water so I would not know what that is like. But I can say taking your eyes off Jesus would be arrogant. Why? Because you thought you can walk on the water all by yourself without having faith in Jesus to guide you along the water. Now of course I’m not talking literal water. I’m sure you get what I’m trying to say here.
It may be easy for you, but it’s not easy for everyone to trust someone or something they’ve never seen, heard, or felt.
Faith. It takes the gift of faith for it to be easy for you. We need to walk by faith not by sight. That’s what Peter did. He used his own “sight” instead of having faith in Jesus and that’s why he started to sink.

Pray. :gopray: Ask God for the gift of faith so that you too can believe. 🙂
I think you’re missing my point. A major point of contention between Catholics and Orthodox is whether the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Son or through the Son. This is one of the issues that have led to a split in the church and people being killed. Why does is it so important that I believe that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the son? When we say the Credo, we must believe that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son. Now if I go about my day believing that the Holy Spirit does not proceed from the Son then it would be a problem because that is just not true. I just don’t think about it on a constant basis. But I do have to believe as the Credo says. The order of the procession of the three persons is a doctrine of the Church.

Gal 4:6
God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts

Rom 8:9
Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

Phil 1:19
through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance

Luke 24:49
I am sending the promise of my Father upon you.

John 15:26; 16:7; 20:22
“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me."

for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:33
Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.
I do believe that what we believe does effect our daily lives more than you think and possibly in ways you might not think.
If we cannot please God without faith, why doesn’t he make it more clear? Faith just doesn’t come natural to a lot of people.
If God actually spelled it out for us then it wouldn’t be faith now would it? As I said before, we do not have to understand in order to please Him. We just have to have faith. Faith doesn’t come natural to anyone. It has to be given to us by God. That is why you have to pray for it and be open to it if you ask God to give it to you. If you really wanted to have faith then you would be open to it and you would have it. Your pride is getting in the way. God only reveals Himself to the humble of heart.

I understand morality and I understand loving your neighbor and I understand the golden rule. But I don’t understand faith. I know that faith can lead some people to do good things, but why is faith in of itself necessary?
This is a valid question. If God loves us, why doesn’t He just save us regardless of our disposition? Why is it imperative that man have faith? It seems that lack of faith in his Creator is the one fault, in man, that has caused all his trouble. Christian faith implies not only belief in but also trust in the One in whom we believe. Adam and Eve lost that relationship-that trust-when they rejected Gods’ authority over them. By rejecting His authority, they rejected His godhood, meaning they no longer believed God to be God. Mans’ universe became disordered at that point and only a restoration of our knowledge of, trust in, and love for God can restore that order. God, through His grace, actually gives each one of us a “measure of faith” but we can choose to ignore it or we can choose to utilize -or “invest” it -as in the parable of the talents. In Gods’ revelation to man, His justice demands that we have faith in Him and He responds to that faith but He never forces the issue-He leaves the choice to us.

**The freedom of faith **

160 To be human, "man’s response to God by faith must be free, and. . . therefore nobody is to be forced to embrace the faith against his will. The act of faith is of its very nature a free act."39 "God calls men to serve him in spirit and in truth. Consequently they are bound to him in conscience, but not coerced. . . This fact received its fullest manifestation in Christ Jesus."40 Indeed, Christ invited people to faith and conversion, but never coerced them. "For he bore witness to the truth but refused to use force to impose it on those who spoke against it. His kingdom. . . grows by the love with which Christ, lifted up on the cross, draws men to himself."41

**The necessity of faith **

161 Believing **in **Jesus Christ and **in the **One who sent him for our salvation **is necessary for obtaining that salvation.**42 "Since "without faith it is impossible to please [God]" and to attain to the fellowship of his sons, therefore without faith no one has ever attained justification, nor will anyone obtain eternal life ‘But he who endures to the end.’"43

1064 Thus the Creed’s final “Amen” repeats and confirms its first words: “I believe.” To believe is to say “Amen” to God’s words, promises and commandments; to entrust oneself completely to him who is the “Amen” of infinite love and perfect faithfulness. The Christian’s everyday life will then be the “Amen” to the “I believe” of our baptismal profession of faith

Mark 16:16
16"He who has** believed **and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.

The Devils’ theme song…

“I did it my waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!” :extrahappy:
