Why is French Catholicism inherently Jansenist? It seems that people no longer wanted to be Catholic anymore since the French Revolution. The Church wasn’t defended during the revolution as much. I’ve heard that St. Therese of Lisieux suffered from scrupulosity and that the Chaplain of the order, Father Youf, emphasized hell and that some of the preachers emphasized purgatory. I’ve heard that Jansenism was one of the main causes of people leaving the church in Quebec.
