Why is getting drunk a mortal sin?

Not neccesarily. If you get drunk onceand nothing bad happens, then its not. But I guess that if you do it with enough frequency that you start damaging the lives of other people around you, and may even get in a car accident or something, then it gets serious.

To become deliberately drunk so as to lose the use of reason is a mortal sin because reason is a divine attribute communicated to us by virtue of our immortal souls and the fact that we are created in the image of God. In addition it can be an occasion for the commission of other evil and dangerous acts.

Accidental drunkeness is not a mortal sin, unless deliberately foreseen. Actions committed in a drunken state are not necessarily sinful unless they can be foreseen as probable, though they could still be terribly harmful, and if foreseen their gravity is augmented by the drunken state…

Of course, people often use the phrase “let’s get drunk” by which they really mean only let’s have a good time and unwind with a drink. So context is important.
