Why is God good?

We choose sin, but we do not choose Hell, we do not choose punishment. Among the sinners, God chooses to punish certain in Hell, chooses to punish others by the purgatory, and others by the penance. Those who are punished by penance and purgatory will go to Heaven afterwards.

God is good, but God is just too. In fact, if God was not good, the damned would experience much greater suffering.
When we are on the other side we will see the reality of the injustices caused by the sins of the damned and then we understand that Hell is the most lenient punishment possible.

The code probably doesnt say how God is going to behave because it doesnt say how people are going to behave towards God. That being said if you witness the rewards for one thing and the other you can use comprehension to see what is liked and disliked to inform you of past actions being related to future events.

OP, you haven’t made a case as to why God is or should be bound by all the same behavioural codes as us

As a parent I might understand that it is good for my young child to avoid alcohol, to not have their own mobile phone or to go to bed bat 7 pm. That doesn’t mean that I am also myself required to avoid alcohol, or avoid having a mobile phone, or go to bed at 7pm.

What is beneficial and needful for the child is not always beneficial and/or needful for me as the parent. In fact it might even be the contrary. My work necessitates my having a mobile phone, whereas I would never allow a very young child to own one.

If you don’t follow the code you are not good.

Alcohol: depends on context
Mobile phone: depends on context
7pm bedtime: depends on context
Cruel and unusual punishment: not good

If God is good, includes good creator and just as well, then NO ONE will be damned.

If even one person would have to be damned then God would fail in both ways, as a creator and as a provider.

God is good, because God predestined everyone to heaven and will be NO ONE damned.

God bless

The required information is availible.
As Catechism states, our judgment is not perfect, being in a state of journey.
302 Creation has its own goodness and proper perfection, but it did not spring forth complete from the hands of the Creator. The universe was created “in a state of journeying” (in statu viae) toward an ultimate perfection yet to be attained, to which God has destined it. We call “divine providence” the dispositions by which God guides his creation toward this perfection:
By his providence God protects and governs all things which he has made, “reaching mightily from one end of the earth to the other, and ordering all things well”. For “all are open and laid bare to his eyes”, even those things which are yet to come into existence through the free action of creatures.161
1272 Ignorance of Christ and his Gospel, bad example given by others, enslavement to one’s passions, assertion of a mistaken notion of autonomy of conscience, rejection of the Church’s authority and her teaching, lack of conversion and of charity: these can be at the source of errors of judgment in moral conduct.

In the first passage you quoted, the Catechism is talking about the universe being in a state of journey. Judgement is not mentioned in that section.

The second passage from a different part of the Catechism is a laundry list of six potential problems in judgement. You want me to sort through those and see what sticks?

Yes, the first portion pertains to the universe which includes persons. A second and third reference is also in the Catechism:
310 But why did God not create a world so perfect that no evil could exist in it? With infinite power God could always create something better.174 But with infinite wisdom and goodness God freely willed to create a world “in a state of journeying” towards its ultimate perfection. In God’s plan this process of becoming involves the appearance of certain beings and the disappearance of others, the existence of the more perfect alongside the less perfect, both constructive and destructive forces of nature. With physical good there exists also physical evil as long as creation has not reached perfection.175
311 Angels and men, as intelligent and free creatures, have to journey toward their ultimate destinies by their free choice and preferential love. They can therefore go astray. Indeed, they have sinned. Thus has moral evil , incommensurably more harmful than physical evil, entered the world. God is in no way, directly or indirectly, the cause of moral evil.176 He permits it, however, because he respects the freedom of his creatures and, mysteriously, knows how to derive good from it:
For almighty God. . ., because he is supremely good, would never allow any evil whatsoever to exist in his works if he were not so all-powerful and good as to cause good to emerge from evil itself.177

If we judge God’s actions using the same ethical code we use to judge men, he is not good. So why do we still consider him good?
Lemme guess why God is good.

Because I am alive? And am free to love? And I didn’t create myself?
Yea, God is good.

God doesn’t force anyone to love him by “predestination”.

Not buying most of this. The codes we follow were set by God - but set explicitly for humanity and humans alone. He openly says, as a parent might to a child when laying down a rule, that the same rules do not apply to Him - “My ways are not your ways, My thoughts are not your thoughts”.

On what basis are you assuming, this being the case, that He is subject to these same rules? We don’t assume that aliens or animals are, or that what parents deem to be good for their children is also good for themselves.

And in relation to things like “cruel and unusual punishment” - yes, we can agree as a general principle that cruel and unusual punishment is “not good”, but we can strongly disagree in practice as to what exactly constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.

This is why, for example, a while back there was hot debate on whether waterboarding terror suspects was permissible or not. Some folks think it is, some don’t. And why debate on whether the death penalty is ever justified in modern day America continues - some think it is, some don’t.

If we are that unclear on exactly “the code” looks like in practice, even as it applies to our fellow humans, how on earth can you possibly say you are crystal clear as to what actions are right, good or permissible for God, who is in a unique situation with moral repercussions no human could possibly begin to comprehend?

The prevailing opinion here is that any human judgement of God is not to be considered comprehensive enough to have any value. That nullifies the first sentance in my OP. That leaves the goodness of God in a position where it needs another source to secure our ability to believe it is real. This source seems to be God alone as his goodness is cited as a component of his definition more than anything else.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I have been arguing from the point of view that goodness is tied to one ethical code that we know. Perhaps my most valuable goal was not to prove that true, but rather while making my best effort to prove it, watch it be slowly crushed while simultaneously finding new ways of understanding goodness through reading your explanations for your understandings of God’s goodness.

Thanks again. Praised be Jesus Christ.

Latin:
If God is good, includes good creator and just as well, then NO ONE will be damned.

God doesn’t force anyone to love him by “predestination”.
God created us in the way He doesn’t have to force anyone to do anything.

By the providence of His efficacious graces God enlightens our minds and we every time freely and infallible choose the good intended by God’s will.

.
302 The universe was created in a state of journeying (in statu viae) toward an ultimate perfection yet to be attained, to which God has destined it. We call divine providence; the dispositions by which God guides his creation toward this perfection:

.
CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA Divine Providence explains the above perfection;
The end is that all creatures should manifest the glory of God, and in particular that man should glorify Him, recognizing in nature the work of His hand, serving Him in obedience and love, and thereby attaining to the full development of his nature and to eternal happiness in God.

http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12510a.htm

.
307 God thus enables men to be intelligent and free, causes in order to complete the work of creation, to perfect its harmony for their own good and that of their neighbors. Though often unconscious collaborators with God’s will, they can also enter deliberately into the divine plan by their actions.

.
Probably most of the time we do what we want to do and we don’t even realize we are cooperating with God’s efficacious graces and unknowingly we do exactly what God wills us to do.

Phil.2:13; “For it is God who works in you BOTH to WILL and to ACT for His good pleasure.”

2022 The divine initiative in the work of grace PRECEDES, PREPARES, and ELICITS the free response of man.

God effects everything, the willing and the achievement. … (Thomas Aquinas, S. Th.II/II 4, 4 ad 3).

.
Our predestination to heaven is God’s package gifts deals, includes for example;

CCCS 1990-1991; Justification is God’s free gift which detaches man from enslavement to sin and reconciles him to God.

Justification is also our acceptance of God’s righteousness. In this gift, faith, hope, charity, and OBEDIENCE TO GOD’S WILL are given to us.
.
CCCS 1996-1998; Justification comes from grace (God’s free and undeserved help) and is given to us to respond to his call.

This call to eternal life is supernatural, coming TOTALLY from God’s decision and surpassing ALL power of human intellect and will. End quote.

John 15:16; You did not chose Me, but I chose you.

Acts 13:48; … as many as had been appointed for eternal life believed.
.
As we see above Goout, God’s will is immutable; therefore, God’s will is always accomplished.
.
God bless
