Why is God so different in the Old and New Testaments?

The God in old testament ( God of Abraham) seems to be an angry & envious God ( God himself states that he is an envious God). The God portrayed in the new testament is a loving God.

When the God is the same in both old & new testament, why do we see a different portrayal?
