Why is God so Violent in the Old Testament?

I am trying to understand the violence in the Old Testament and how that fits with the loving God that Jesus shows us in the New Testament How can at God of love who holds little children in His arms and cares when a sparrow falls possibly be the same God who ordered the slaughter of entire people groups, babies and all (for example when the Israelites entered Canaan)? I have to believe there is a way to explain this but so far haven’t found anything that made sense. Thank you.
