Why is hell an eternal punishment?

I hope you can help me with some of these concepts.

Why is hell an eternal punishment? That seems like a really long time compared to our life on Earth.

If Satan is going to be destroyed what will happen to hell? Similarly if Christ opened the gates to hell, doesn’t that mean that no one would have to go there?
