Why is human life sacred? From womb to tomb?

This is probably the kind of question that would be more appropriate in one of the apologetics forums.

However, I’m pretty sure it’s sacred because we are all made in the image and likeness of God. And yes, it is sacred “from womb to tomb”, from the moment of conception to the moment of death. And even human remains are to be treated with dignity.

Because each man is imbued with a spiritual immortal soul, thus he is in the image and likeness of God.

The follow-up is that our culture increasingly rejects religious philosophies undergirding law and social policy, what will happen to the idea of innate human rights and human dignity?

We’ve already seen how that concept can be easily tossed aside when dignity endowed by the Creator is replaced with dignity based on the capability of the person. This is why abortion is tolerated, why euthanasia is growing in power, why people argue for embryonic stem cell experimentation, why there are so few Downe’s Syndrome babies anymore, why China has so many fewer girls than boys, etc…

And we can expect more. When human worth and dignity is proportional to people’s talents and abilities, we will see far worse atrocities than the above in the future. I’m sad and worried for our civilization.
