Hey James,

Weather he existed or not is not relavant in my opinion. I still follow his word - period. If you found out tomorrow that Jesus never really walked this earth, would you really stop believing in his teachings? if not, than why does it matter?

Secondly, there were many historians around during the days of Jesus. None have ever written about him (the only writings of Jesus are in scripture, as well, there are other gods that shared his same story… but with a differnt name, such as Horus, etc.

The important point is this… wheather it was Jesus, Horus, or Sam, the persons name is not important. what is important is the path these stories teach. the lessons they bring us. these are not simple stories to take lightly. In my opinion, they are the key to becoming “enlightend”. and I take them seriously, and follow them daily.

I thought you said there wasn’t a shred of evidence that he even existed! Now you’re asking us to imagine He did and what He would be doing.

The fact is, there are tons of evidence. You might start by reading the Bible, which contains more than a few clues. But there are other forms of evidence as well-- Josephus the historian, and the writings of the early Church fathers. Somehow I don’t get this conspiracy to make us think a nonexistent person really existed.

I understand in a general sense what you’re saying, but I believe that “if you found tomorrow that Jesus never really walked this earth” and no one the same but known by a different name did, you would need to stop believing in his teachings, since those specific teachings never existed. OTOH, there were very similar teachings (not identical) before Rabbi Jesus by people such as Rabbi Hillel (that is, if the latter existed!), so you might follow them instead. However, how could you rationally and in good conscience justify following the “teachings” of a person who never existed?

I believe in the person of Jesus Christ, without which His teachings would be void of meaning. Without Christ there is no resurrection, and without a resurrection there is no Christianity. Christ declared Himself God. If He never existed, then what is written about Him is a lie. If He did exist, but lied about who He was, of what value are His teachings? To not believe in the existence of Jesus Christ is to deny the power of His teaching, the power of His obedient death on the Cross.

Apparently, you believe the writings of Josephus are so redacted as to not constitute a historical record. I think most would disagree with you. But you have to look no further that the Gospels and letters of the New Testament to see a historical record, better than one any outsider might have written. Just the reading of them quickly advises you that this is no mere invention of men, to try to what? perpetrate good on the world? It’s all there. Maybe you need to read it one more time, but this time, say a little prayer, “God, if you are real, please reveal yourself to me in these Scriptures.” I know, wishful thinking! But it has happened for others that such a prayer worked wonders. It’s all about faith, which you must have before you are able to understand.

These lessons and stories are really quite worthless without the power of the Cross. And if they are just stories, one of the biggest stories of all, take up your cross and follow me makes little or no sense. Where are we to follow Him? He’s going to His crucifixion. Does that make sense to you? Does it make sense that the only way to have life is to give our life away? To deny all our own ambitions to follow Him? To deny all our own desires to follow Him? To do nothing except the Father’s Will? To become a servant, not in order to get something out of it in this world, but because the Master so tells us? I hardly think people will be inclined to take up their cross and follow Jesus if He is just s figment of someone’s imagination, if He did not really overcome death, if He is not really the Son of God.
