Why is it important that I confess the number of times I have committed a sin?

Dear Father Vincent,

I’m wanting to go to the Sacrament of Confession. It’s been a year since by last one, but I feel as though I understand the sacrament much better. It seems as though it’s a bigger deal for me; I don’t think I’m in the state of grace.

Why is it important to confess the number of times a mortal sin was committed? I can only begin to estimate the number of times I have committed certain sins. What if I can’t even remember when I started committing the sin?

Hi,

The number helps the priest to determine the seriousness of the offense. To steal a bicycle is wrong, but fifteen bicycles is much worse. I go at least once a month. That way I’m less likely to forget my sins. So many people go to Confession and can’t remember any sins, although they know they’re not perfect.
