Why is it necessary for Mary to be a perpetual virgin? I’m not asking for proof that she was, but rather the reasons for it (any prophecies, logical arguments, etc).

wynd,

Quite simply, it’s not strictly necessary. It is fitting and proper, but it is not necessary.

Short answer: If you touch the Ark, you die.

Longer answer: Mary was the spouse of the Holy Spirit and the door through which God may pass but no other.

Even Longer answer…I’m going to sleep, so maybe someone else can pick it up?

God Bless,

If you examine the history of heresy in the the Church in the first 500 years you will find they all revolve around the nature of Christ. Mary’s
virginity is crucial to Christ’s divinity.
If Mary had relations with Joseph (a very serious Jew) then it’s a sign that Jesus’s birth was not extrordary. Hopefully you can see were this leads. I think modern protesants in there Anti-Catholic ferver are being dupted. A common occurance when your are motivated by hate. Its about Christ

When is it proper for a woman to bear the children of two different fathers?
  1. If the first father dies. Did God die?
  2. If the first father abandons mother and child. Did God abandon Mary and Jesus?

I don’t really know if its a case of it being necessary. I think it’s just a case of it just being SO.

I once asked a very wise pastor ( Free Methodist) this question, and he said that the perpetual virginity of Mary is necessary to safeguard the teaching of the Virgin Birth.
He went so far as to say, that he personally believed that Mary not only remained a virgin, but that he thought that she probably was not able to have children…Something that could not be known, not in that day, but that it seemed to him to be an essential protection of Jesus’ miraculous conception, that Mary be as far removed as possible from ever bearing any other child…
That is to say, he thought that even if she had not been perpetually virginal, she would never have been able to have children anyway.

Mind you, this was one man’s idea, but I have thought about it whenever this subject comes up. I don’t know that I agree with him, but I very much agree with the kind of thinking that brought him to this conclusion…A deep & abiding faith that Mary was totally set apart from any other woman (person!), to be the Mother of God.

Because she is the New Eve, the Ark of The Covenant, and therefore cannot be defiled.

There are some lovely verses from the Song of Songs that Saints, especially St. Alphonsus de Ligouri (quoting much earlier writings by others) cited as supporting the teaching of Mary’s perpetual virginity as well as her immaculate conception. Here they are, but if you want to read the Saint’s explanations in more depth you’ll have to read “The Glories of Mary”.

As a lily among the thorns, so is my love among the daughters. (Sngs. 2:2) The thought being that she is the only flawless one among the women of men who belonged only to the king, to God.

One alone is my dove, my perfect one is but one. (Sngs 6:9) Same sort of idea here as for the verse above.

My sister, my spouse, is a garden enclosed, a garden enclosed, a fountain sealed up. (Sngs. 4:12) This verse is more specific. Here the chosen woman is portrayed as a garden and a fountain, both images of the female body, that belong to the king, to God, alone.
