Why is it so wrong to receive Communion in the state of mortal sin?

I was reading some posts on confession and the members often added an extra precaution that one should not go to communion if one had not confessed mortal sin. I know this is correct, but why? If you are in mortal sin, how much worse can it get?
 
Hi,

It’s not a matter of how much worse it can get for us. My friend, it isn’t all about us. That’s the whole point. To receive our blessed Lord when we are in the state of mortal sin is worse than dropping the Host into a filthy sewer. The Lord who suffered such agony on our behalf deserves better than that—don’t you think? There are degrees of sin. Why offend Him more?
