Why is it some Christians seem to want others to end up in Hell?

In anger, many times people will tell others something along the lines of ‘go to Hell’, but, obviously, they probably don’t mean it. It is just a highly inappropriate insulting remark.

Yet among some Christians (especially Fundamentalists), there seems to be a portion who, by their actions and declarations, seem to hope that others end up in Hell. Its as though they are so obsessed with being right, that they would sooner condemn everyone who disagrees with them to some kind of eternal torment than actually hope that God, in His infinite mercy, would allow others into Heaven. You hear certain Fundamentalists who condemn Roman Catholics, Jews, other Protestants, atheists, etc. to Hell and this and that and I wonder: WHY?

Personally, I would hope that everyone in the end is Saved and that all would experience God’s mercy.

I heard that a lot when I was a Mormon – people seemed to really enjoy telling us that we were going to wind up in Hell because we believed this or that. One of the things that attracted me when I came to the Catholic Church were the prayers for the dead. The Catholic Church at least prays that all the departed will be brought into God’s presence. Unfortunately, there are a few Catholics who do seem to take delight in condemning others to hell. I believe God desires all to be saved, but there might be some who refuse to accept God’s grace. I just can’t imagine who they would be.

A lot of people are self-righteous jerks, and if eternal torment for everyone else is what it takes for them to be Right, hey, fine with them. That’s pretty much it.

I do not wish for anyone to go to hell. I personally don’t believe (or can’t remember) if I ever said that. To be tormented forever in constant pain and despair is not wished upon anyone. But people say it out of anger and don’t mean it to be torturous or despair. (I would hope).

I haven’t heard any individual saying that to me, but my thought is that people sometimes have good intentions in telling others people to do the right thing by warning them consequences of not doing the right thing. And many times, because of lack of charity, our words can become very bitter and hurtful even when we have good intention; other times, it is our ego that got us saying things we shouldn’t have said - I’ve had this mistake myself.

They generally mean this in a loving way, even if it doesn’t appear that way. There is often an element of self satisfaction that they’ve got it “right” and everyone else is “wrong”. yes I have a lot of personal experience with this my own godmother has rejected the Catholic Church completely and she is fundamentalist to the core. She swears out that anyone who doesn’t believe what she does is wrong. She swears that all non-Christians are going to hell she doesn’t even want me to hang out with Muslims or anything and to put it mildly she was completely against me coming back to the Catholic Church.
And I have had plenty of other people who have told me I’m going to hell because I’m Catholic. They argue that Catholics are being taught wrong and that we spend too much time worshiping Mary with repetitive meaningless prayers instead of having a relationship with Jesus. I cannot tell you how many fundamentalists have told me that.
