I was just about to say the same thing.
Hello believers,

Right…I agree…So why such a fascination with Catholics who love and venerate Mary and why the negativity by some non-Catholic Christians towards Mary? Is it simply because “Mary” is too “Catholic” for them, or were we warned about this difference in Luke 2:35?
Luke 2:33-35

33 The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him;
34 and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, "Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted

35 (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."
Peace 🙂

I Love Mary, to the point of giving my children to her for spiritual protection…

I Love my Mother Mary ever Virgin.❤️
Didn’t Jesus also give Zebedee’s son to Mary too from the Cross?
It says that from then on that disciple took her into his care.

People who don’t quite get what you’re saying about loving Mary,in my limited opinion, don’t yet understand how completely Jesus loves his Mother and wants to share her.

Consider this: The identity of that precious Blood which saves us was biologically drawn from his own Mother’s blood while He was being formed in her womb… remember Mary conceived without human intervention.

No problem at all loving Mary.

I love her dearly.

But I don’t pray to her and I don’t believe I need her intercession.

I can respect that. For me personally, concerning her intercession: In his book True Devotion To Mary, St. Louis de Montfort says that with one sigh our Blessed Mother can mobilize all the forces of Heaven. That’s definitely an ally I would want in my corner.

Okay, but why should I believe him?

I didn’t mean to imply you had to. I was exchanging my personal opinion with yours.

Would you be willing to briefly discuss , perhaps,…the Hail Mary?

Hello Steadfast,

I am sure that you already know that Intercession and the Communion of Saints is Catholic belief and that during Mass this prayer is recited -
I confess to almighty God,
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned through my own fault,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done,
and in what I have failed to do;
and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin,
all the angels and saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,

**to pray for me to the Lord, our God.**However, asking for Mary’s Intercession and praying the Rosary or praying to Mary is not a “Catholic requirement”.

The focal point of Catholicism is on Jesus Christ, not on Mary.

Although, Mary, the mother of God, does have an important role in Christianity. The first three Gospels begin with the Nativity Story and the “Virgin Birth” and Mary is that “Virgin”.

You may find this link helpful.

Peace 🙂

Okay, but why should I believe him?
The reason I didn’t mean to imply you had to believe him Steadfast, is that Catholics aren’t even obliged to believe him; following that same tangent of thought Jimmy B just posted.

Much of what Catholics “believe” is not pronounced so much, “believe it …or else!..”; it’ would be more a matter of, "proposed as worthy of belief ".

You know, to support part of your position, true Roman Catholicism does what it can to avoid “Mariolatry”. The first time I ever read that, I said to myself :“Gosh…we actually have enough people doing this that someone had to come up with a word for it?”

Again, when you say you don’t pray to Mary, you are right. Unfortunately our english laguage is sometimes abused and conveys erroneous notions.

The best way (to date) I’ve ever read devotion to Saints or the Communion of Saints expressed was in the biography of Blessed Brother André - the founder of St. Joseph’s Oratory here in Montreal. Sometimes linguistic subtleties become evident when contrasted against the canvass of a different language. Here’s what Brother André said about his own mother after her passing.

(The translation from french to english is exact, because twice in french I used the equivalent of "to" and twice I was corrected by french -speaking people who instructed me to use “with…not to”.)

Brother André: “After my mother died, I did not pray for her for very long; but I frequently prayed ***with ***her.”

So if we are praying properly (in a catholic sense) we shouldn’t be praying to Mary, but with Mary as the prayer says - we ask her intercession :"…Holy Mary,Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen."

I really like this post and this quote (below).

Explain this away:

“All gifts, virtues, and graces of the Holy Ghost are administered by the hands of Mary to whomsoever she desires, when she desires, in the maner she desires, and to whatever degree she desires. Mary is the dispensatrix of all the graces God bestows. Every grace granted to man in this life has three successive steps: from God it comes to Christ, and from Christ to the Virgin, and from the Virgin it descends to us.”
ST. BERNARDINE OF SIENNA

“Every grace which is communicated has a three-fold origin: it flows from God to Christ, from Christ to the Virgin, and from the Virgin to us.”
POPE LEO XIII

“Mary has the greatest and clearest claims to our homage and praise: she is the salvation of the world; our dependence upon the august Mary is complete and universal. There is neither on earth nor in Heaven any justified soul, any one of the Elect, who does not owe Mary his justice and his glory.”
VEN. WILLIAM JOSEPH CHAMINADE

“Many have proved invincibly, from the sentiments of the Fathers -
among others: St. Augustine, St. Ephrem, St. Cyril of Jerusalem, St. Germanus of Constantinople, St. John Damascene, St. Anselm, St. Bernard, St. Bernardine, St. Thomas, and St. Bonaventure - that devotion to Our Most Blessed Virgin is necessary for salvation, and that it is an infallible mark of reprobation to have no esteem or love for the Holy Virgin while,
on the other hand, it is an infallible mark of predestination to be entirely and truly devoted to her.”
ST. LOUIS MARIE DE MONTFORT

“Mary is the whole hope of our salvation.”
ST. THOMAS AQUINAS

“If our life were not under the protection of Mary, we might tremble for our perseverance and salvation. In her hands Jesus has placed His almighty power in the order of salvation. All the graces of salvation, both the natural and the spiritual, will be given to us by Mary.”
ST. PETER JULIAN EYMARD

“The Child is not found without Mary, His Mother. If, then it is impossible to separate what God has united, it is also certain that you cannot find Jesus except with Mary and through Mary.”
POPE ST. PIUS X

“If you persevere till death in true devotion to Mary, your salvation is certain.”
ST. LOUIS MARIE DE MONTFORT

“In the multitude of the Elect she shall have praise, and among the blessed she shall be blessed.”
ECCLESIASTICUS 24:4

“Christ entrusted to His Mother’s maternal care the mission of making the Church a single family. Yes, in Mary we have the bond of communion for all of us who, through Faith and Baptism, are disciples and brothers of Jesus.”
POPE JOHN PAUL II

“However great a sinner may have been, if he shows himself devout to Mary he will never perish.”
ST. HILARY OF POITIERS

“He who is devout to the Virgin Mother will certainly never be lost.”
ST IGNATIUS OF ANTIOCH

“The servants of Mary are as certain of getting to Paradise as though they were already there. Who are they who are saved, and reign in Heaven? Surely, those for whom the Queen of Mercy intercedes. The clients of Mary will necessarily be saved.”
ST ALPHONSUS MARIA LIGUORI

“With reason did the Most Holy Virgin predict that all generations would call her blessed, for all the Elect obtain eternal salvation through the means of Mary”
ST IDELPHONSUS

“Every one of the multitudes, therefore, whom the evil of calamitous circumstances has stolen away from Catholic unity, must be born again to Christ by that same Mother whom God has endowed with a never-failing fertility to bring forth a holy people.”
POPE LEO XIII

“Bearing in her womb the Savior, Mary can also be said to have borne all those whose life the Savior’s life enshrined. All of us, then, as many as are knit to Christ, have come forth from Mary’s womb: one Body, as it were, knit together with its Head.”
POPE ST PIUS X

“Souls protected by Mary, and on whom she casts her eyes, are necessarily justified and saved. Just as it is impossible that they be saved from whom Mary turns away her eyes of mercy, so it is certain that they who are loved by Mary, and for whom she intercedes, will obtain justification and eternal life.”
ST ANTONINUS

“We believe that Mary opens the abyss of God’s mercy to whomsoever she wills, when she wills, and as she wills; so that there is no sinner, however great, who is lost if Mary protects him.”
ST BONAVENTURE

“Not a single soul who has really persevered in her service has ever been damned.”
ST LOUIS MARIE DE MONTFORT

“O Mother of God! If I place my confidence in thee, I shall be saved; if I am under thy protection, I have nothing to fear; for being thy client is a certainty of salvation which God grants only to those whom He intends to save.”
ST JOHN DAMASCENE

“He who neglects the service of the Blessed Virgin will die in his sins. He who does not invoke thee, O Lady, will never get to Heaven. Not only will those from whom Mary turns her countenance not be saved, but there will be no hope of their salvation. No one can be saved without the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary.”
ST BONAVENTURE

“To desire grace without recourse to the Virgin Mother is to desire to fly without wings.”
POPE PIUS XII

“Jesus honored her before all ages, and will honor her for all ages. No one comes to Him, nor even near Him, no one is saved or sanctified, if he too will not honor her. This is the lot of angels and of men.”
ST MAXIMILIAN MARY KOLBE

I don’t know if it needs explaining; it’s about as clear as it can possibly be for me Roguejim. Thx

Why is it wrong to love Mary?

My letter (prayer) to Mary

Dear Mary,
=

*You are the Mother of God and my mother too. You were the perfect Mother and the perfect disciple. Mary, you were the one chosen (handpicked) by God from all time and all woman to be the Mother of God. You are the precious vessel and the way my Lord entered the world. *

*You have always done the “will of our heavenly Father” and are by Jesus’ definition, His “brother, and sister, and mother” (His loyal servant, follower and disciple). Please pray for me that I may always be a loyal follower of your Son, as you are. You have shown me how to Love your Son. You are the Mother of God and Jesus’ disciple. *

*You are the only person who ever lived that was with Jesus from the beginning, until the end at the foot of His cross. You held the baby Jesus in your arms, loving Him and protecting Him, never letting Him go, until he was taken from you at the Cross. You never denied him or left Him. You remained quite because you knew that you would have to suffer so that the rest of mankind might be saved. You were there in the upper room during Pentecost! *

*As for your name in scripture, there exists not a single word against you. There is no finer example of a person who has completely surrendered himself to the will of God, as you Mary. You were truly, madly in love with your Son Jesus and who from the beginning; you knew He was “God with us”. Your perfect expression of surrender, “May it be done to me according to your word” is the source of my strength. *

*Mary, you kept many things in your heart and reflected on them, you truly knew the Lord before any of the apostles and He knew you. When you brought the baby Jesus to Simeon, His destiny was revealed to you; before any other disciples knew, you knew! “A sword pierced your own heart, so that the thoughts of many hearts would be known”. *

*I can only imagine how you must have suffered and the strength you must have needed to continue on to the very end, to the foot of His cross. I love you Mary, thank you. You encouraged Him at the wedding at Cana, the point in which your Son, Jesus and our Lord began His ministry, you said, “do as He says”, may these words always be a reminder to me to, "do as He says "You loved Jesus with all of your heart, all of your soul, all of your mind and all of your strength. Has there been anyone as devoted to my Lord, as you? *

*Blessed Mary, the Lord is with you, you are blessed among all women and all generations will consider you blessed. You have been reunited with your Lord, how sweet that must be. Mary, my mother, please pray for me that the Lord have mercy on me a sinner and that one day I can come home to the Lord. *

Thank you Mary and pray for me that I may always think of your great example of love, sacrifice and surrender. One cannot think about you, Mary without thinking about your son Jesus. I am madly in love with you and I am madly in love with your son, my lord Jesus Christ. May my focus allows be on Christ, as you were always focused on Him.

Your son and Christ’s loyal follower,

I don’t know which I like more Jimmy -the picture or the prayer. As I read your prayer I found myself praying it too. Do you think it would be all right to post a copy of it to my personal file ?

I used very few of my own words to write this prayer, they came almost entirely from the Bible…So sure 🙂

I believe that, if we post anything here at CAF, that others are allowed to copy it…

Peace 🙂

No one can serve two masters, that why we can’t put Mary in God’s place in our hearts.
I take it then you don’t have a place in your heart for your earthly mother for fear of committing idolatry. Heck, by your line of reasoning you could even be damned for all time for having put up a portrait of your mother in your home. I’m afraid you’ve taken the scriptural verse you’ve alluded to entirely out of context. Mary is not our material possession or an obsessive sinful passion. She leads us to God, not away from God. And the question boils down to this: Do we approach God on our terms or on his terms? Christ has revealed to us through his Church what his terms are concerning his mother and our mother in relation to the faithful. Christians who appeal to Mary for her intercession and advocacy have a far better chance of getting to heaven than Christians who do not. :yup: It was a personal insult to the King of the ancient Davidic kingdom for a subject of his to scorn the love the Queen Mother (Gebirah) had for her people.

Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, exclaimed: “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.” {Luke 1, 42-44}

Mary leads us to her Son out of love for us. One can only fail to recognize and appreciate her love for us, and so be indifferent towards her, by having the wrong idea about God. He is our heavenly Father above all, not a master in relation to a cringing slave.

“Do whatever he tells you.” {John 2, 5}

Good Fella

You bring up a point that I forget far too often Good Fella (great post btw); it’s something I’d heard in sermons initially: That from antiquity, in the Old Testament, the honor of queen belonged to the mother of the king and not his wife.

The following website provides some solid scriptural foundation bearing out that fact: home.inreach.com/bstanley/queen.htm

In a different twist, It was the emperor Constantine who restored the title of “Augustus” to his mother (325 AD) after his father Constantius Chlorus, Caesar of the Western Roman Empire had died. Constantius Chlorus had divorced Constantine’s mother (293 AD) as ordered by Diocletian in order to marry Theodora and then qualify as Caesar of the Western Roman Empire.

Constantine’s mother is of course St. Helen, who is accredited with finding the original Cross of Christ.
