Why is it wrong to love Mary?

I mean, the artist obviously did not have an understanding of the ethnicity of the indigenous people of the Middle East.\

The hand positions I refer to are both of Mary’s hands and the baby Jesus left hand. Very unusual and obviously deliberate positions. Kind of interesting and I have no idea what that is all about. But for sure it’s not a casual meaningless thing in such a meaning filled work of art.

It is a 19th Century painting by William Adolphe Bouguereau named Madonna of the Lilies. Boy you are getting a little nit picky here. 😉

Mary is only the firsfruits of the promise. Jesus, in His infinite generosity, gave us His own mother in fulfillment of his promise.Do you not have respected holy men and women that you think of as family? :confused:

Honest, I am not trying to get picky. It’s always interested me that so many artists depict Middle Eastern people of Biblical times as white anglo wasps and we just go with it as though they were right. Obviously they were completely wrong!

The hand positions are very interesting. Are there reasons any of you know of for those curious positions? They are quite unique. And there are three hands in the same position. I dunno, but I bet there is something interesting there.

Off topic, but The Caucasian Race extended from The Caucus Mountains in Russia down all the way to Northern Africa (that’s where you get your Egyptians).

Plus, most of the Arabs I know personally (and I grew up in heavily Arabic area) have blue and green eyes and light brown hair.

It’s the media that represents people of the Middle East as darker.

Plus…The Virgin has been represented as Black and as Brown and as Asian and as Indian.

Why you only pick the “White” one to comment on (Namesake…I knoweth who thou are now!), is odd to me. There’s an agenda there.

You don’t understand that region. Forever, the indigenous people of the Middle East have been dark skinned. It’s an adaptive trait. And for you information, Egyptians are usually quite dark skinned.
