Why is Jesus the Son of God?

Why is Jesus called the Son of God, considering that he is God and has always been? I was born and raised in Christianity, but I never wondered this until a seeking friend asked. St. John says “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…” (John 1:1). From this my friend became confused. If Jesus was with God “in the Beginning” and he is not a creature but God himself (as we believe, of course), then why do we call him “Son of God”? Many thanks, and God bless you.
 
There is one true God who is a Trinity of Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Second Person of the Trinity is called the Son and the Word because he is the image of the First Person.
