Why is Marriage not considered to be eternal?

here is a hypothetical case for y’all. Legally and sacramentally married couple. After a few years husband cheats on wife, breaks her heart, “remarries” another (non-sacramental), repents after a few years and goes on living with spouse 2 in fraternal way.
he and spouse 2 have repented, are forgiven, go to heaven. Spouse 1 never remarries, lives rest of life with the hardships of a single parent, no companionship, etc.she dies, goes to heaven. WHY for heaven’s sake would she want to be bound to that man for eternity???
Just my humble opinion
Let go and let God. He’ll take care of the situation.

We all tend to compare Heaven to a permanent vacation in Hawaii. It just isn’t like that. Our little brains can’t comprehend Heaven. It will all be just great. Let it go. +

The way I see it:

No, there’s no earthly marriage in Heaven. Why have Earthly marriage when we can have something far greater? There will be no need for Earthly marriage because in Heaven we all love God first and foremost and then we love EVERYBODY else with the fullness of love. Including our former spouses. And the relationship with all people whom we love will be more perfect and eternal and beautiful then our comprehension.

Heaven NEVER makes things worse. The reason there’s no Earthly marriage in Heaven to our spouses is because there’s Heavenly marriage in Heaven which involves everybody and is perfect and eternal!

Unless you’ve been and come back, never say never. As far as I know, nobody has been and come back to tell the tale. The Church doesnt teach that all marriages on earth are null and void in heaven. Sorry. We will all see what is waiting on the other side. 😃

I don’t say never. The Church, which gets its authority from God himself, says never. Heaven is perfect. Therefore, nothing is worse in Heaven.

EDIT: Or should I say, nothing GOOD is worse in Heaven. And marriage is good.

I don’t think anyone is disputing the words of Jesus, just trying to understand them in our limited human way. Jesus didn’t get angry when people misconstrued what he was saying.

I agree with you that God’s plan for us is so much better than anything we could imagine. If we can remember that God only wants good things for us, then whenever we find ourselves thinking “how could God be so cruel” we could answer ourselves: God is not cruel, we are failing to understand.
Guessing that Mark 8: 31-33
must be missing from your Bible.

31 He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days. 32 He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, (Jesus) rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do."

Angry, maybe? Peter tries to teach the Lord “to do better.”
Sure, Peter, says Jesus? Ah, NO.

Jesus says “Get behind me, Satan”
and He says it in the presence of all.

Now, your second point: “God is not cruel, we are failing to understand.”
That was and is my entire point.

St. Paul reminds us:
Code:
1 Corinthians
Chapter 2

9 "But as it is written: **"What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him, 10 this God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God." **
Who could ever doubt that God is wrong! God is God.

Blackout, I know you are struggling with this and I know it is only human to compare our life on earth with our life in Heaven. However, just trust God. It will all work out joyously. Also, we are not free to reject ANY of God’s teaching. It’s all or nothing.
Your are SO correct.
Thanks for saying it before I had to do so.
It’s difficult being the ONLY one pressing a point of doctrine or dogma.
Then to get complaints about “my” stand — wow.

You’ve been?
Yes. After seeing the Pearl Harbor memorial it’s all just scenery. +

Did anyone read what Father Cantalamessa wrote? Not dissolved, transformed.

actually I seem to recall the Bible saying somewhere (not sure where) that the same rules
apply to widows remarrying as well, but I’m not sure on that one.
I’m not sure if you didn’t understand my question, or I’m not understanding your answer. So let me rephrase it:

Given that **you **feel that the marriage bond should be eternal and last after death, do you believe it is wrong for widows and widowers to remarry?

My answer is yes. I could never love someone as much as I love my wife. If something happened to her I would join the priesthood, but I would never, ever remarry.
The Church doesnt teach that remarriage is wrong though, so you are okay. 😃
Since we have become one flesh we cannot be seperated. 🙂

Sorry, JB, I was directing this query to the OP… but thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut! In all honesty, I don’t think that I could ever remarry either (would not be fair to any future spouse… I’d forever be comparing him to my husband!) but the fact is that remarriage after the death of a spouse IS permitted, therefore, I’d be interested to hear what the OP has to say, given the topic of this thread.

When my wife and I were married in the Catholic Church twenty-five years ago. The “…till death do us part…” thing, was not included in the vows we made to each other. We each used the words “…all the days of my life…”.

Looking back, those words seem very Catholic to me. They acknowledge our status as mortal human beings of free will. As such, we have the right and the duty to control our words and actions. When we freely entered into the Sacrament of Marriage, it was our intent to make our vows of loyalty and devotion to each other, a condition of the Salvation we hoped to achieve together, in Christ. There were no disclaimers.

I agree with this and couldn’t have said it better.
