Why is missing Mass a mortal sin?

I want to join the Catholic Church, but cannot understand why a loving God would send someone to hell for casually missing mass if they die before confessing to a priest. You could attend mass for years, and miss going just once, and not confess this and you’re doomed for hell. This makes no sense.
