Jerusha,
I suppose you have detected that I wished Brigham Young hadn’t spoken without thinking so often, or was mis-quoted. I also have thought JFS needed to not speculate in any of his writing, because he was perceived as an authority.

But my point has always been that true doctrine is either in the scriptures or comes from the united words of the First Presidency and the Council of Twelve Apostles.

One of my very good long-time personal friends is the executive secretary of the Quorum of the Twelve, who taught me in Seminary years ago. I had told Paul that I would email this friend about the Gospel Essentials manual, which I did and he recently called. We had a nice visit. He noted the passage could be understood either way. He also said that these brethren are very busy, so their review of some printed manuals may be cursory rather than word by word.

But one of the foundations of our faith and belief is personal revelation. The Holy Ghost confirms truth so that we can personally attest we “know” because of that witness from the Holy Ghost within our soul. I am comfortable being at odds with some of the things Brigham Young said and JFS wrote because of that very principle–I didn’t have to take their word for it, ever. I could find out for myself. No blind followership here.

Again, just wanted to clarify. Thanks for your friendship, Jerusha. One of my favorite recent-find scriptural gems is Jeremiah 9:24. I appreciate the Lord’s lovingkindness to all of us, all over the world.
Personally, I love the way Brigham Young talked off the top of his head. Sure he wasn’t very scholarly, but he had some fantastically interesting ideas! In fact the most interesting Mormon beliefs come from his discourses. I don’t think Mormons should go mainstream. You’ll lose all your originality and peculiarity! 😃

An uncommonly peculiar people. 😃 And they would only be a memory, if it weren’t for BY, who was so adept at running from prosecution, while complaining about persecution. Certainly not well educated, to have confused the two words.

I cordially invite all LDS who are truly interested in learning about Catholicism to stay here.

As for the rest of you, vamoose, get outta here. You have been useful in my research project into the Mormon psyche, but that is done now. Maybe you will be back sometime, truly interested.
Jerusha,
I did learn some things, and I had already hoped I wouldn’t be asked any more questions nor see any more glaring errors. I like the feature on this website of being able to pull up all past posts by an individual–nice feature.

I wish you well.

To all, please don’t harbor ill will towards the LDS or its people. Those feelings only detract from your own health. Christ wants us to be healthy physically as well as spiritually. That is one of the things the Sermon on the Mount is all about. 👍 Vamoose I go! :)👍

I enjoy reading things about Mormon beliefs.

One of my favorites is where Joseph Smith said that there are men living on the moon who dress like Quakers and live to be nearly 1000 years old. (The Young Woman’s Journal, Vol. 3, pages 263-264. See reprint in Mormonism – Shadow or Reality? by Jerald and Sandra Tanner, page 4.)

I do find the story of polygamy to be very sad though.

Gertabelle,

not true …
For some reason, CAF allows these threads to be continually started by LDS members. Honestly, I think the number of threads and …
This thread was started by … a Catholic.

Also this thread is on a “Non-Catholic Religions” Forum. Seeing that the LDS church is non-Catholic, they seem to be the right place

So I’m thinking they’ve pretty much been invited! and typically, they’re very polite. Sure,
on occasion an LDS “CAF-member” gets a little testy, I’m impressed it’s not worse
with the amount of provoking they’ve endured. And I don’t think they’re actively trying
to convert, I think they’re just trying to make their case. Yea there’s some
grandstanding and I’m sure they hope there’s conversions, but aren’t we Catholics
hoping for conversions as well?

If you want to know what it’s like for a Mormon to try to convert you, go a LDS visitor’s
center.

And Gertabelle, I know you said you’re “outta here” I hope you re-visit 'cause I don’t want this wasted;)

Just my opinion but I think it is because there are alot of "Former Mormon’s on here that are now Catholic. I think some are trying to answer questions to people who are still Mormon and who are starting to question the LDS Religion. 🤷

Yes check it out, you can read Gort (among others) misrepresent Catholicism without any defense by Whyme.
I try to do my best over there defending catholicism but I can not see every post or thread. But I do think that the catholics that post there know where I stand. 🙂

I agree with you. I think that some posters miss understand this section of the forum.

The Tanners? And this came from a young woman’s journal? 🙂 What is interesting about JS is that much of what mormons have about what he said, comes from notebooks and journals of other members at that time. But…who knows just how accurate they were. However, the lds church is publishing the JS papers:

josephsmithpapers.org/Default.htm

This should help a great deal in presenting a more detailed picture of JS.

I have never seen you defend Catholicism on that board(or this one) in any level close to the level you defend Mormonism here on this board. Where on MAAD have you ever referred someone to a Catholic site to gain an understanding of Catholic doctrine? Where have you ever defended the teachings of the Catholic church the way you defend the teachings of the LDS here?

As to the Catholics there knowing where you stand, they’ve never read your posts here. All your backhanded compliments implying Catholics are drunks and don’t behave in a Cristian fashion don’t are here not there. On that board you are firmly LDS going only as far as saying Catholics are nice people.

You say you are Mormon and Catholic but I have never seen you subscribe to any Catholic doctrine and have seen you actively encourage Catholics to disregard the teachings of the Church. You are LDS through and through and your posturing as a Catholic reflects badly on the LDS.

How would you explain this:

Just scroll down and see my responses. I have several on that thread.

I read the thread when it was first started, Notwetyet was particularly vicious. Your response starts out digging on some posters from this site then you go on to say Catholics are nice people. Rather limp defense, the same might be said about the Shriners or the Boy Scouts. This is not quite the enthusiasm you display here in defense of Mormonism. Where are the explanations of Catholic Doctrine, the links to Catholic sites, your testimony of Catholicism.

I lived in a LDS household, there were no bibles to be found there, yet there was that tripe they call the book of morman sitting around.
Considering the bible is basically as important as the Book of Mormon in LDS life and every active family of LDS members I know have a bible if not several in their homes causes me to believe that either your lying or you lived with an inactive family. Oh but your Catholic you couldn’t be lying:eek:

The Mormons can be powerful allies. They recently worked to help a controversial social law get passed.

The Catholic Church is very large, possibly the largest single religious group (which makes them juicy ground for missionaries from all sorts of other religions).
But the Catholic Church body is fractured along political and social lines.

The Mormons are well organized and when they move, they move as a unified group.

May God have mercy on you.

I know he will, i am just worried about you lying to people on a site where you should be trying to represent your religion respectively.
Brandon, mormons have bibles in their homes, this I agree. However, I could see how a visitor to a mormon home could possibly think there was not a bible there. If it is not out, yet a BoM or triple combination is out every time they visit, they would have the impression that there was no bible in the home. This could easily happen, especially if mormons are in a year where their study is not focused on the bible.
