Why is New Year's Day a holy day of obligation?

The question says it all. My wife asked and I didn’t have a good answer. Also, I searched here and on the web and couldn’t find an answer.
 
It is not the secular new year that is the reason that January 1 is a holy day of obligation, but because January 1 is the day on which the Church honors the Blessed Virgin Mary under her title as Mother of God. On the liturgical calendar, the holy day is the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.
