Strange, isn’t it? Irenaeus mentions nothing of Grapte in his list of the successors of Peter. Why not?Notice that Clement uses presbyters and episcopate interchangeably. He knows nothing about a monarchial bishop in Rome or Corinth, and the letter was from the church of Rome not from Clement himself. Hermas says Grapte and Clement were joint leaders in Rome.

Why should it bother us if the Church transitioned from a period in which Apostles with universal authority lead the Church to the present system of Dioceses and Bishops? This is a discipline and not a doctrine, and the Church has the authority given to her by Christ to organize and manage herself as seems good and necessary. Given that she has outlasted ANY human government before or since, I think she chose wisely.
