Why is Pope Francis so obsessed with the devil?

I think it is a good thing.

(CNN)—Pope Francis seems to be obsessed with the devil.

His tweets and homilies about the devil, Satan, the Accuser, the Evil One, the Father of Lies, the Ancient Serpent, the Tempter, the Seducer, the Great Dragon, the Enemy and just plain “demon” are now legion.

For Francis, the devil is not a myth, but a real person. Many modern people may greet the Pope’s insistence on the devil with a dismissive, cultural affectation, indifference, or at the most indulgent curiosity.

Yet Francis refers to the devil continually. He does not believe him to be a myth, but a real person, the most insidious enemy of the church. Several of my theologian colleagues have said that he has gone a bit overboard with the devil and hell! We may be tempted to ask, why in the devil is Pope Francis so involved with the prince of demons?

This intelligent Jesuit Pope is diving into deep theological waters, places where very few modern Catholic clerics wish to tread.

***Mabey because there are so many who do just that, “take the devil as a myth.”
The devil is NOT a myth and is very influential in our world - WE NEED TO BEWARE!

I wish more clergy would remind us the wiles and snares of the devil.***
 
Well the devil from the beginning has always placed highest priority on attacking marriage, the family, and sexuality. Now more than ever in the history of mankind these things are under heavy assault and sin that multiplies as a result is rampant. The amount of confusion in the world has come to the point in which if you point out the obvious errors you are vilified.

Pope Francis is not obsessed, he is doing his job 👍
 
Yeah, I kind of don’t get why this is news. But then again I don’t really hear any priests mention the enemy during mass so maybe it is news.
 
If you ask the devil for a big suitcase full of cash, he may oblige. Stranger things than that have happened, I guess. But the money may be counterfeit.
 
Considering Pope Francis is a RELIGIOUS leader, the media shouldn’t be to surprised. If all this stuff is a “myth” like the media says, then why be Catholic in the first place?

Pope Francis is NOT “involved” with the devil, he is warning us against him and his sly ways. Just look around and you can see the influence the devil has in our modern way of thinking and living, including the idea that the devil is a myth instead of a REAL person. Read the Bible and you’ll see how real he is!! This intelligent Pope is the head of our Catholic Faith, guided by the Holy Spirit and we would be wise to “listen to him” God Bless, Memaw

The funny thing is the person writing the report is a Canadian Catholic Priest… Rev. Thomas Rosica.
 
Perhaps the Holy Father has had a personal encounter with the Wicked One. These are not the kind of things people generally reveal to others, except to say “the devil is real” and leave it at that. We need more clergy emphasizing the reality of demons and hell. People tend to overlook this, focusing on the feel-good “Jesus loves me” message instead. Yes, Jesus loves me, but He will also be my judge with the power to condemn me to the place set aside for the devil and his minions.

It’s a recurring theme as old as mankind itself. The devil does not want you to follow God’s Will because he did not and because of that his union with God was forever broken. The devil has designs on having us suffer the same fate. We don’t even have to choose the devil over God necessarily, we simply have to choose ourselves and our desires over God. It truly is a simple and easy to understand concept that anyone can grasp yet the devil has been incredibly effective at leading us astray throughout history nonetheless.
 
The devil is a person, a fallen angelic person.

He exists, and the saints became well aware of the evil one.

We are allowed to be tempted by satan and his followers, because what God gives He does not take back, but uses it for good. When we resist, we grow spiritually. We can resist when we lead a life of prayer and get closer to the Lord through the sacraments.

I had a weekend retreat recently, and the holy priest who gave it was well aware of the devil. All of us came away with new eyes of what spiritual warfare is all about.

Wars, money nor governments will bring us peace. Christ’s peace has to grow in us and attract others to Him.

We need to pray for priests to become holier and be aware that what the Church teaches is true! It was an excellent retreat and we all were very blessed by the sanctity of the priest, and his deep sense of humor.

The evil in the world today can recede, when the light of Christ in Christians becomes brighter!

Much prayer and sacrifice is needed.

Who confronted Jesus in the wilderness? Who goes about like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour? When right and wrong, good and bad are personal or social constructs, the devil disappears. It is “My will be done.” “No one is going to tell me what to do.” God disappears as well.

At that point, individuals and societies are in great danger.

Pope Benedict:

"We are moving toward a dictatorship of relativism which does not recognize anything as for certain and which has as its highest goal one’s own ego and one’s own desires. The church must defend itself against threats such as “radical individualism” and “vague religious mysticism”. [emphasis added]

Pope Francis has also spoken about an ‘inner conversion’ for each of us. God is the center. The Devil was loosed and is a reality after our first parents sinned.

This is one of the best things about pope Francis. He is very straightforward about the reality of evil and the devil.

I know what you are saying, my parish is the same way, I tend to think my CC, and some others, are sort of ‘catering’ to the majority of the parish, people dont want to hear about being punished for doing things or taking part in whats considered normal, enjoyable, popular things in modern society, they want to hear happy things, they want to be justified in the things they do (especially if its popular), even if God would call it sinful or wrong. They want to be seen at church every week, driving nice cars, wearing nice clothes, they like talking about their cul de sac lives, their great jobs/ incomes, where they are going on vacation, etc.

I think what alot of people in my parish would love to hear the priest say is something like “Dont get too down on yourself for indulging in popular, sinful cultures, dont worry too much about following Gods laws, God understands times have changed, he will understand and give us a pass if we are good people”. These people are fair weather christians imo, they are religious, but to a certain extent, they do have their limits, if religion/faith gets in the way or , or conflicts with something popular in society, they look for something, anything, to justify it, trying to ‘get around’ following Gods rule, but still being able to call themselves good christian people.

These are the people the devil really loves, he knows when the time comes, they will likely deny their faith, if it means loosing their incomes, homes, families, freedom, etc. they will turn on their faith in a heartbeat.

I dont like saying that,especially about my own parish, but I have known many of these people since childhood, I know what their lives are like outside of the CC, I know how they think. I wonder about this alot, how they got to this point, Ive tired talking to one of my own family members about this before, they are content just going to mass one hour a week and leaving it at that, they dont really LIVE the faith, job, family, come absolutely first.

Your obversations are on target. Much prayer and sacrifice is needed to turn this tide. It is possible with the Lord.
