We see clerical celibacy in the Church from the beginning. The development of the discipline in the Latin Church occurred over several centuries in the early Church. The Eastern Catholic Churches have a different discipline.Why did the Catholic Church mandate priestly celibacy? Did the Catholic Church have a reason for it?

It’s been a thing, St Paul clearly loved celibacy.
The issue was whether they could be married or not.

The short answer to why the Church selects from among the celibate is that, in this way, a Priest’s interests won’t be divided between providing for his “flock”, and raising a family. (1Cor 7:8, 32-35).The question is,why?

I’ve read a couple of things contributed to this.
As the Church became a dominant social construct and it began to accumulate wealth, Priest became increasingly despotic in order to amass the wealth being funneled to them by the communities they served. The corrupt Priests were ordaining their sons and more and more communities were being afflicted by wealthy families of Priests.
This resulted in communities that no longer provided social environments with the qualities that allow the faithfull to grow in sanctity.
The response to this corruption came from the laity. The laity began living in places set apart from the communities corrupted by a wealthy families of Priests. This movement of the laity developed into the Monastic movement. As monastaries began springing up and becoming known as places where Christian sanctity could flourish their communities started providing the Church with Priests known for their Holiness. As the Monastic movement grew it was noticed that the best Priests were coming out of the monastaries. So eventually the heirarchy decided that all Priests should be formed by the monastic life. Monastic life and the sanctity it produced was a life diciplined by vows of Celibacy. So that dicipline was made mandatory for the Priests of the west/
