Why is Solomon depressed in Ecclesiastes?

Ecclesiastes is very much how life is without God.
Nothing new under the sun.

But what about much beyond and above it?
 
I like this thread’s title, because the Book’s author does “sound” depressed. And yes, it is hard to read. If one were to mis-read it as a collection of absolute statements it would appear as heretical as can be.
But, the author was not depressed. He was writing to counsel a person who is depressed.

Ecclesiastes is written from the perspective of a counselor to someone who is deeply depressed. His response is not a theological dissertation on suffering. Rather it is a pastoral response to a person in great need.

It’s probably worth mentioning that Solomon did abandon God for women and pagan idols at some point. And so Ecclesiastes may also carry a certain connotation of guilt and repentance. Not only that, but it could also have an Augustine’s Confessions moment, that having dedicated his life to worldly pleasures, he realized it did not make him happy and all he knew was that he deeply regretted not having followed God throughout his years in the world

I firmly believe that every verse in the Bible was inspired by God. Ecclesiastes is a most important book because it provides a certain groundwork for all the other book. I take Ecclesiastes most seriously and I believe I can see the vanity everywhere in the world today. Worldly wisdom is most certainly vanity!
