I think Catholicism simply makes the best use of suffering, when we unite our sufferings to those of Jesus Christ (Col 1:24?). We can apply those sufferings for various meritorious and spiritually beneficial intentions.
Example:
God, I graciously and patiently endure and offer up this suffering, united in the sufferings of the Passion of Your dearly beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the holy souls in Purgatory.
