Do the SDA abtain from porc as well? do they follow all the Mosaic law or just parts??

Do the SDA abtain from porc as well? do they follow all the Mosaic law or just parts??
SDAs encourage vegetarianism, but they require abstanence from unclean meats as defined in Leviticus. They do not follow all of the Mosaic law, they draw the line at sacrificing sheep infront of the church.

Neither the Mass nor Baptism is a memorial.
Not according to Scripture.

Luke 22:19 19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

1 Corinthians 11:24-25 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

Colossians 2:12 12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

There’s no verse that says Jesus “abolished the Sabbath requirements.” The absence is why most Christians as late as the 5th century were still keeping the Sabbath.

It isn’t the Sabbath that is a shadow–it is a memorial to God’s Creation of life on this world–it is the eating and drinking that are shadows–which, BTW, the believers at Colossae were doing without being chewed out by Paul for doing so. And the shadow is of things yet to come (future tense).

The future tense is used because it was being done away with by the Church in its own timing just as the command for circumcision explained in Acts 7:8 is done away with by the Church in Acts 15. Another example is the Jewish dietary laws regarding meat, etc. are done away with by the Church in Acts 10.

Some changes are accomplished through direct Divine intervention such as Acts 10 and others are be decided by Divine guidance such as the choosing of the Apostle to replace Judas Iscariot as in Acts 1:15-26.

Jesus promises to be with His Church until He returns and He promises the Holy Spirit to guide His Church. (cf. Matthew 28:19-20, John 14:25-26)

Jesus did not keep the Sabbath requirement when He established His Church. It is not mentioned in His list of commandments for this reason. There is no verse which explicitly states that Jesus abolished the Sabbath requirement. However, Jesus was already disregarding some of these rules pertaining to the Sabbath when He healed on the Sabbath because He truly is Lord of the Sabbath as stated in:

Matthew 12:1-8 “At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. And His disciples were hungry, and began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. 2 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath!”
3 But He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God and ate the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? 5 Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless? 6 Yet I say to you that in this place there is One greater than the temple. 7 But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Jesus states that He is greater than the temple (and all the requirements for the Sabbath) and He gave His Church the power to “bind and loose” when it chooses to do so. Jesus would honor His Church’s decisions just as He honored Moses decree on divorce. He even honored Moses decree on divorce when it contradicted God’s original intent because Moses was His spokesperson. (Matthew 19:3-9)

However, Jesus changed the permanency of marriage back to its original form in His teaching and so the Church will perpetually uphold this teaching of Jesus. It is now non-negotiable.

Luke 13:14 “But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath; and he said to the crowd, “There are six days on which men ought to work; therefore come and be healed on them, and not on the Sabbath day.”

Jesus disagrees with the ruler. Jesus is the supreme ruler and He heals on the Sabbath disregarding their “rules.”

Hebrews 8:13 “In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.”

I agree that the Sabbath was the rest instituted after the physical “creation” and it was incorporated into Israelite worship practices by Moses along with animal paschal lamb sacrifices. These paschal lambs prefigured Jesus, the Paschal Lamb who forgives sins, and we are “new creations” in Christ (Galatians 6:14-15) by our baptisms and we are able to inherit eternal life because Jesus conquered death by His resurrection and so we celebrate this state of being “new creations” in Christ instead of the Sabbath rest with its paschal lamb which cannot save us.

We will enter into eternal rest and eternal life with Jesus as adopted sons and daughters of God, co-heirs with Christ. Our state of “new spiritual creation” and the Holy Mass which presents us with the Body and Blood of the Paschal Lamb which does save us and this Lord’s Day overshadowed and replaced the worldly creation’s Sabbath requirements. We now have a “new” and “better” covenant. (Hebrews 8:6)

Just as the story of Salvation unfolded slowly over millenniums and culminated in the birth, death, and resurrection of Christ, the new Church settled arguments as they came up and will continue to do so until Jesus turns over His Kingdom to His Father at the end of time. (1 Corinthians 15:24)

The future tense is used because it was being done away with by the Church in its own timing
No, much simpler. The spring festivals symbolized Christ’s 1st coming, the fall festivals symbolize the 2nd Coming. For example, the blowing of trumpets symbolizes the closing bell for mankind before He comes again to receive His own.
You were doing great (👍) till the last clause. The Sabbath is a memorial to God creating life on this earth–as such he as our Creator has the right to say how we will live.* And as the writer of Hebrews the Sabbath is a type of the rest we have in Him for it is He who sanctifies us. When you keep the Sabbath holy you show that you accept His sanctification for you and are not trying to earn your salvation by your own work.
  • He told us to “remember” in the 4th commandment because He knew we’d forget.

First off note that Col. 2:12 says nothing about memorial or remembrance. So you shot yourself in the foot on that one.

Second off, you need to look at things with a semetic mindset. When a Jew wanted to do something in remembrance of an occasion, he didn’t have a memorial service, he didn’t get out the scrapbook and look at the snapshots and remember good times. No, when a Jew wanted to remember something he went out and did it all over again. If a Jew wanted to remember his wedding, he would dress in the same clothes as he wore at the wedding and he would get the same rabbi, and invite the same guests and they would perform the same ceremony all over again. Just so when Jesus told his disciples to “Do this in memory of Me” he wasn’t saying well think of me now and again when you do lunch, NO, Jesus was saying DO THIS. Do exactly what I am doing here and now, giving you my body and my blood. Even Paul got it right in I Cor. 11, when he went on to say that if you eat and drink unworthily you are eating and drinking damnation and for t his reason many of you are sick and some even dead.

Communion and Baptism aren’t symbols they are real, if you didn’t twist the Bible all out of shape, you would know that.

Hmmm, didn’t read it did ya?

Colossians 2:12 12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

Semitic, not “semetic.”
When a Jew wanted to do something in remembrance of an occasion, he didn’t have a memorial service, he didn’t get out the scrapbook and look at the snapshots and remember good times. No, when a Jew wanted to remember something he went out and did it all over again.
Since they didn’t have photography back then that’s a given.

The Jews didn’t re-do; they remebered through types.

What they did was remind themselves through the calender (weekly Sabbath, yearly feasts) and through types. So, the lamb slain for their sins was a type that met its antitypical fulfillment on the death of Christ.

Another set of examples: Moses predicted a greater than he would come. So, just as Moses led the 12 tribes of Israel, Christ had 12 disciples. Just as Israel croseed into the Promised Land through the river Jordan, so Christ was baptized in the river Jordan. Just as Israel wandered in the wilderness for 40 years, so Christ was in the wilderness for 40 days.
if you didn’t twist the Bible all out of shape, you would know that.
That’s the second time you made that claim that you can’t and don’t prove

Hmmm, didn’t read it did ya?

Colossians 2:12 12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
Yes, DJ, I did read it.

In baptism I am buried with Christ - no memory, no memorial, no symbol - I am buried with Christ and I rise with him, because God raises me just as God raised Jesus from the dead.

Your attempt to make this text say something other than what it does is proof of your twisting of Scripture.

Since Christ isn’t literally buried and raised with you during the baptism and since He had already so almost 2,000 years ago it is a memorial. Your baptism is an echo of His. Is that more plain?

I never ever twist Scripture. I use exegesis to derive the fullest possible meaning from the text.

No, but I am literally buried and raised with Him during baptism, so it is not a memorial, I am truly buried with Christ and risen with Christ.

Yes, are Catholics allowed to read what other Christians write? See 666man.net/Colossians_2_16-17_By_David_Conklin/colbiblio.html – I spent 3 years studying the topic and one guy who was going to do his Ph.d. dissertation on Colossians emailed me saying “I think you are the only one who has it right.”

So two people disagree with the entire Catholic Church and Jesus Himself and we are wrong? OK! 😉

There’s no verse that says Jesus “abolished the Sabbath requirements.” The absence is why most Christians as late as the 5th century were still keeping the Sabbath.

That is a SDA way of looking at the truth. We call it lying!

No. The analogy was used as a way to explain things.

Your premise about what SDA’s teach is in error. The doctrines of the SDA church are based on God’s Written Word.

**Not actually, they are based on your erronious interpretation of God’s Written word. **

We agree. And yet when I try to use reason it is condemned as being the source of my faith, which it is not.

See next.

I explained this several times–perhaps you missed it in this long thread. Dr William Mead Jones studied foreign languages to see what they called the seventh day of the week. He found that over 100 called the seventh day “sabbath” Spanih is a classic and well-known example.

They got that from the Hebrew word for “resting day” Many more languages call a devise you talk into a telephone in their language. and they smoke “cigarettes” in their languages. 😃

Obviously, facts are not an analogy.

First of all, an analogy has nothing to do with this. Do you know what an analogty is? Since I didn’t buy into the Marcion heresy that split the Bible in two I use the whole Bible.

Remember an analogy isn’t the same thing as the same thing! 👍
And yet they repeatedly went against God’s will! My point was that the Semitic mindset isn’t like our Greek mindset.

And yet they disobeyed so often!

God didn’t tell them that marriage was between a man and a woman. They reasoned it out from the Creation account. God didn’t tell them that the first-born was to lead the house-hold. They reasoned it out from the Creation account. They were created in the image of God and so when God rested on the seventh day so did they.

When did God give the Sabbath observance to Moses? What about all the Jews before Moses? If the Sabbath was only for the Jews why didn’t Jesus says so? Jesus said the Sabbath was for man, he didn’t say anything about the Jews. Jesus is the Savior of all mankind, not just the Jews. Otherwise, only the Jews will be keeping the Sabbath on the new earth.

**Jesus said the Sabbath was for man not man for the sabbath. Man controls when the Sabbath is not the other way around! **

do they believe Leviticus laws existed before Moses as well? do i understand well that the SDAs teach that we have to observe the Jewish purity laws to follow Jesus? like judaizers or something?

Thank you to all who have welcomed me to the forum and have encouraged me. It is appreciated!
No, much simpler. The spring festivals symbolized Christ’s 1st coming, the fall festivals symbolize the 2nd Coming. For example, the blowing of trumpets symbolizes the closing bell for mankind before He comes again to receive His own.

Thank you for the info about the Festivals. I think that there can be more than “one” reason/meaning for things since Paul stated that we Christians are not to be judged by rules pertaining to new moons, festivals, or sabbaths: Colossians 2:15-17 “Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. 16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.”

We are no longer obligated to keep the sabbath in the New Covenant according to Paul. Christ established His Church to lead His flock and the Church is expected and authorized to make worship decisions/obligations for the Church.

Final authority is the Church: Matthew 18:16-18 “But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ 17 **And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.**18 “Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

  • He told us to “remember” in the 4th commandment because He knew we’d forget.
The Israelites did have a difficult time obeying God’s commandments. They could not even keep from sinning while Moses was absent for 40 days while up on Mt. Sinai receiving the stone tablets with the Ten Commandments on them. Exodus 24:12-18, Exodus 32:1-10, Deuteronomy 5:1-3

The Church made the Lord’s Day, Sunday, the main day of worship for the Christian Church so the commandment now reads “Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day.”

The Church established this day for worship using its “binding and loosing” powers given to it by Jesus Himself because as Paul stated that we Christians
“are not to be judged by new moons, festivals, or sabbath” laws.

Please disregard Post #952. I did not place the “quote marks” correctly and it is about impossible to tell who said what! Perhaps the moderators will delete it for me?

Wow, my original question…hope you get an answer.

HC
Hello, happilycatholic
Funny, I feel for Patrick, and you, because I myself have yet to get an answer from DJ or any SDA from my question about Col.2:16-17. I have answered DJ’s questions but he avoids the truth about my question. Maybe DJ is just here to vent his pride on distorted SDA scripture interpretations, maybe that is why when met up with truth, they avoid the Truth, and pretend to know the exact interpretation of scripture.

I recall when Jesus spoke with Nicodemus (crusher of people) when Jesus spoke the word “Anothen” which has a double meaninig, “born from above” or “born again”. DJ, like Nicodemus choses the wrong translation of a double meaning word, be it from Latin, Greek, or Aramaic.

If SDA’s believe John 6;… Jesus is speaking symbolically, when true Exegisis only reveal the Aramaic language that Jesus was speaking literally his body and blood. I believe this proves that SDA’s new gospel teachings conflict with first century, Jesus, and apostolic teachings from scripture.

No, but I am literally buried and raised with Him during baptism, so it is not a memorial, I am truly buried with Christ and risen with Christ.

You are buried–but He was–therefore, in baptism you are conducting a memorial to His death and resurrection.

do i understand well that the SDAs teach that we have to observe the Jewish purity laws to follow Jesus? like judaizers or something?

No.

since Paul stated that we Christians are not to be judged by rules pertaining to new moons, festivals, or sabbaths:
Paul isn’t talking about the days. The believers were being judged for their eating and drinking on those days.
We are no longer obligated to keep the sabbath in the New Covenant according to Paul.
And yet most Christians even as late as the 5th century were still keeping the Sabbath–and even later in Ireland and Ethiopia.
Paul stated that we Christians “are not to be judged by OT dietary, new moons, festivals, or sabbath” laws.

My emphasis added. As I noted in my study (which has been completely ignored) there are no drink laws–so any interpretation that assumes Paul is talking about OT dietary laws (why should an ascetic care about that?) is false.

Maybe DJ is just here to vent his pride on distorted SDA scripture
I don’t have pride; I don’t recall your questions.

Yes, are Catholics allowed to read what other Christians write? I spent 3 years studying the topic and one guy who was going to do his dissertation on Colossians emailed me saying “I think you are the only one who has it right.”
May your efforts and fidelity be blessed by God. Yes, Catholics may read. In some cases, it is not edifying to read them. For those weak in the faith, it is better to read orthodox Apostolic doctrine, until one has the foundation to recognize the differences.
There’s no verse that says Jesus “abolished the Sabbath requirements.”
👍

In fact, we have the opposite!

“For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” Matt 5:18-20

It isn't the Sabbath that is a shadow--it is a memorial to God's Creation of life on this world
Yes, the Sabbath is the memorial of God’s creation of life in this world. The Lord’s Day (Sunday) is the memorial of the new creation in Christ. 👍
it is the eating and drinking that are shadows–which, the shadow is of things yet to come (future tense).
In all places, Paul indicates that our salvation begins at baptism, is in process during this life, and is completed when we are glorified. It is that hope of glorification that is yet to come, as Christ is our Sabbath Rest.
No. The analogy was used as a way to explain things.
Necessary since nothing else is available. 🤷
Code:
Your premise about what SDA's teach is in error. The doctrines of the SDA church are based on God's Written Word.
Well, you just got done explaining that it was based on reasoning. So maybe you mean that an SDA ‘reasons’ their way through what they believe is God’s Word?
Code:
when I try to use reason it is condemned as being the source of my faith, which it is not.
I must have misunderstood, as it seemed to me you claimed that it was. Now you are saying that it is based on “God’s Written Word”, which is subject to the mind of the one reading it.
Obviously, facts are not an analogy.
T’hat is obvious to me, but it appears that you use your “analogy” as if it were a fact.
Code:
Do you know what an analogty is? Since I didn't buy into the Marcion heresy that split the Bible in two I use the whole Bible.
I doubt that. I is more likely you are using the truncated Protestant Bible given to you by the Reformers.

The truth is not defined by those who are disobedient.

God did tell them. Human reason is what resulted in the polygamy we see rampant in the dynasty of David.

So, they figured out they needed to rest on the Sabbath because God did? How is it they did not “reason out” that they needed to copy God in creation also?
When did God give the Sabbath observance to Moses?/.quote]

I think that you are the Sabbatarian expert here. I will defer to your judgement on this point.

Those who have not received Christ as their Sabbath rest still observe the pre-Christian Sabbath.
When did they hear this?
Jesus taught that the intention of God was that a man should leave his mother, and a woman leave her home. He was clear that only one man and woman were part of the marriage with God.
You said God gave the Sabbath, now you say it is man-made, which is the lie?
I said that, when evidence cannot be found for a doctrine in Sacred Tradition, or Sacred Writings, we suspect it is a tradition of man. I was referring to your declaration that there were “days” before the creation of the sun and the moon.

Jesus clearly taught that that was not the way it was supposed to be. I don't need a group of people to tell me which way is up.
My point exactly. The Jews did not practice monogamy. Evidently they did not “reason out” correctly. 😉 If you had just been there, you could have straightened them out!

I don't agree woth your preconcieved POV that the first 3 days of creation had day and night without a sun--doesn't that bother you?
Actually no. The vast majority of humanity rejects apostolic teaching. There is very little I can do about it except pray.that the darkened minds enslaved by the god of this world will be awakened to the Light of Christ.

Since Christ isn’t literally buried and raised with you during the baptism and since He had already so almost 2,000 years ago it is a memorial. Your baptism is an echo of His. Is that more plain?
It is plain that you wish to understand the passag in some other manner than the plain reading. The Apostle states we are buried with Him in baptism. There is nothing about a “memorial” or an “echo”. This is a spiritual event, in which we are joined to him.
I never ever twist Scripture. I use exegesis to derive the fullest possible meaning from the text.
Yes. I am sure. 😉
You are buried–but He was–therefore, in baptism you are conducting a memorial to His death and resurrection.
Perhaps a memorial in the sense of amanesis, like the Last Supper. This kind of memorial, like the Passover, is participation.
It seems this is true. It seems that the SDA’s pick and choose which Laws of Moses they wish to follow.
Paul isn’t talking about the days. The believers were being judged for their eating and drinking on those days.
Indeed! Because all the days are esteemed the same.
Code:
And yet most Christians even as late as the 5th century were still keeping the Sabbath--and even later in Ireland and Ethiopia.
" Some judge one day to be better than another, while others judge all days to be alike. Let all be fully convinced in their own minds. 6 Those who observe the day, observe it in honor of the Lord. Also those who eat, eat in honor of the Lord, since they give thanks to God; while those who abstain, abstain in honor of the Lord and give thanks to God." Rom 14:5-6

It was not “most Christians”, but for those that did, I am sure they were fully convinced in their own minds, just as Sabbatarians are today.
My emphasis added. As I noted in my study (which has been completely ignored) there are no drink laws–so any interpretation that assumes Paul is talking about OT dietary laws (why should an ascetic care about that?) is false.

If you had no pride, you would not be offended that everyone here has completely ignored your study. 😉
