Not sure if this is an Eastern Bishop’s Chair that is vacant, but I was just curious why the Church has left that seat vacant seeing as there Egypt is one of the most Christian countries in the Middle East (with Lebanon and Jordan I think).

I was not aware that the the See of Alexandria WAS vacant.

There are in fact three claimants to it:
  1. Coptic
  2. Greek Orthodox
  3. Coptic Catholic

The Patriarch of the Melkite Church is the Patriarch of Alexandria and Antioch. This is refering to a eparchial Bishop of Alexandria I think. Also, I do beleive the Coptic Catholic see is not vacant presently. Hope that helps.

Well Pope Shenouda isn’t going to be on Catholic-hierarchy .

I think that one reason the See of Alexandria, Egypt is vacant is because Egypt is predominantly a Muslim country. For as much, and as loudly, as Muslims may protest to the contrary, Christians who live in Muslim lands, and especially CATHOLIC Christians, must either convert to Islam, pay the jizya (or poll tax), or die. 😦

  1. Pope Shenouda III (the name means “Son of God” btw.)
  2. Pope Theodore II
  3. Patriarch Antonius Naguib
  4. Patriarch Gregory III
  5. Latin patriarch: defunct.

4. Melkite.

**While the Melkite Partriarch combines in his person the Greek Catholic patriarchates of Alexandria and Jerusalem, I don’t think there’s a separate “Melkite Bishop of Alexandria”.

But I hope scapularkid sees that that rather than being vacant, the throne of Alexandria is rather crowded.**

Personal union. sort of like Elizabeth II being Queen of Canada.

Isa, i’m noticing the irony of my thread and your signature. Please explain to an ignorant what exactly your signature means 😉
I got the idea from someone whose signature was “Catholic in communion with Holy Orthodoxy,” as a reply to “Orthodox in communion with Rome,” On that:

I’m Egyptian (Isa Almisry means “Egyptian Jesus”), hence Alexandria. Canonically I am under the Patriach of Antioch, in his autonomous diocese in North America, but according to the diptychs, I am in communion with the Patriarch of Alexandria. The use of Pope is more for shock value: it is the normal, and original title of the see of St. Mark, but my use is to make those who think of only the Vatican to think and ponder.

OK still confused on your religion though…Orthodox or Catholic?

Isa threw me. I’m too used to filtering that and only accepting Yesuu3 as the transliterated Arab name for Jesus 😃

And I would’ve caught almisry if it were written separate as Al Misree, but enough about my shortcomings with al-lugha al-3arabeeya
