Why is the Litany to the Holy Ghost private?

It is recommended that the Litany to the Holy Ghost be a private devotion.

I have wondered why this is so for years now. Any answers are welcome.

because it is not part of liturgy? private devotion does not necessarily mean it has to be recited alone, in private, it can be done in a group, but it is still private because it is not liturgy, which is the public prayer of the church. the rosary is a private devotion, as is the Divine Mercy chaplet, even when said in a group, because they are not liturgical prayers.

my guess, don’t know, never saw the document you quote, where did you get the info?
 
The Church has only approved six litanies “for public use.”
These are the litanies of:
The Saints
The Blessed Virgin Mary
The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus
The Most Precious Blood of Jesus
The Holy Name of Jesus
St. Joseph

Other litanies are “for private use only.” It does not mean they are necessarily bad or wrong (although I’ve seen some pretty poor modern attempts at “relevent” litanies), but they have not received official church approval for use at public church functions or liturgies.

Good point.

The litany of the Holy Ghost is found in various prayer books. It usually disclaims in parenthesis: (for private devotion only).

What you said has never occured to me. Thanks.

Even still that doesn’t really answer for me why?

I didn’t know that fact. I knew some you mentioned are used in benedictions. I have never viewed anything wrong with it. Just don’t understand why its private.

It’s hard to say for sure why the church did or did not approve this or that litany for public use.

The Litany of the Saints is quite venerable and probably is approved on that basis.

For the others, one would have to research the history of each one and try to determine on what basis it was approved for public use.
