The season of Ordinary Time is broken into two parts during the liturgical year. The first part begins on the Monday after the Sunday following January 6 (unless the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord falls on that Monday because Epiphany Sunday is the day before, in which case Ordinary Time begins on the following Tuesday) and continues to Ash Wednesday, when Lent begins. The second part begins on the Monday after Pentecost and continues through the end of the liturgical year, to the first Sunday of Advent of the new liturgical year.
Interestingly, the second part of Ordinary Time does not necessarily pick up where the first part left off. Instead, the second part is set up so that the last week of the liturgical year is always the thirty-fourth week of Ordinary Time and any adjustment to the calendar is made at the *beginning *of that part of the season.
This year, the first part of Ordinary Time ends in the seventh week of the season and the second part begins in the ninth week, therefore, there is no 8th week of Ordinary Time this liturgical year.
