Why is the pope rich?

A friend asked me " since the pope took a vow of poverty why is he so rich". i tried to explain that the pope doesn’t own anything and that all of it is owned by the church. i can’t seem to explain it to him very well, do you have an suggestions on how to explain this to my friend?
