Why is the Sabbath on Sunday instead of Saturday?

How did that happen? How could I respond to someone for example that was anti-catholic that says something like the Catholic church is evil because look it changed the time of the Sabbath. Sunday Sabbath is not in the Bible excetera excetera…😊❤️ thanks.

Well, we didn’t change the Sabbath. The Sabbath is on Saturday. We have services on Sunday because we’re celebrating Christ’s resurrection, not the Sabbath.

Ask then to show you the word “Saturday” in the bible. Point out that the Lord Jesus is Lord also of the Sabbath. He, who cannot sin, routinely violated the Sabbath. Tell your (Adventist) friend that he/she should not believe in a hypocritical savior.

But, what is that was not the case? The Apostles, given all authority on earth, even over death, met on Sundays, as they had been kicked out of the Synagogues, just as Jesus predicted. Thus, the Lord’s day, when Jesus rose from the dead, the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, and when they met for breaking of the bread (The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass) was begun.

We have the Lord’s permission to celebrate Sunday.

We do not need man’s permission.

Yes. In the East, Saturday is still the Sabbath and during our Fasting periods, the fast is less on both Saturday and Sunday in honor of the Sabbath and the Lord’s Day.

The person I’m talking to is not a Seventh Day Adventist. I think he’s a non-denominational pastor.

I recently posted a picture of a gigantic Virgin Mary I don’t know if it’s a statue and possibly rather a balloon like a parade balloon cuz it’s so huge or made out of some material.

He asked me what does this picture mean? I said something in response like why this picture was taken I don’t know or for what reason but I can hope that it was to honor the mother of God.

Then he said something of you know … Graven images. And I responded back by copying and pasting something from Catholic answers.

And that he responded with no where in the Bible does it say to make graven images out of people or something like that.

In his long response he said the Catholic church has been leading away people from God for a thousands of years now and they are the ones that tried to change God’s times and laws.

I follow his Instagram and I think he probably believes that the Sabbath was changed I think he celebrates it on Saturday.

I need to think about how to respond.

This is true. We celebrate the Lord’s Day because that is the Day He chose.

Jesus IS our sabbath rest. We find our rest in Him.

9 So then, there remains a sabbath rest for the people of God; 10 for whoever enters God’s rest also ceases from his labors as God did from his. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, that no one fall by the same sort of disobedience. Heb.4

Mark 16:9 " Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Mag′dalene"

John 20:19 [ Jesus Appears to the Disciples ] On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

Acts 20:7 “On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the morrow…”

1 Corinthians 16:2 On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that contributions need not be made when I come.

The early Church gathered on the Lord’s day to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection, and His appearance to the disciples. Since all the first Christians were also Jews, they celebrated the Sabbath as well as the Lord’s Day.

This guy is all ate up with his personal opinions and you cannot and will not win any argument with him. You can only win by agreeing with him. That is a lose-lose. Tell him that he relies on tradition for his beliefs. He will be shocked, but the bible is a tradition. It has been ‘handed on’ (rtradition) being the written tradition.

Tell him that you are very thankful that he believes every word that the Catholic Church approved of in his bible.

In your off time, simply pray for him and show him the joy that you have in being Catholic.

Let the Holy Spirit do the rest. It will take some time.

In Hebrew, Saturday, “Shabbat,” is the only day of the week that can be properly be said to have a name of its own. The other days are just numbered, from “first day” (Sunday) through “sixth day” (Friday).

In the earliest days of the Church, the Christian day of worship was switched from Saturday to Sunday, “the first day,” commemorating the Resurrection (Acts 20:7 and 1 Cor 16:2).

It’s just a quirk of the English language that we have taken over and anglicized the Hebrew word “shabbat” to designate Sunday instead of Saturday. As far as I’m aware, this has happened in no other language. In Italian, for instance, sabato means both Saturday and the (Jewish) Sabbath, but never Sunday. The same is true, I believe, of French , Spanish, German and so on. If for any reason they don’t want to use the name “Sunday” they can call it “the Lord’s day” (e.g. le jour du Seigneur), or “the day of rest” or some other phrase of that kind. But never the “Sabbath”!

Did Jesus in effect “routinely violate the Sabbath”? If Jesus healed on the Sabbath, this action is permitted since saving life and restoring health take precedence over the Sabbath rest and festivities according to Jewish law. If He worked on the Sabbath, that depends on the kind of work since work that involves matters of health may be permitted. Sex (which, for some, is work) is encouraged on the Sabbath. Feasting is encouraged on the Sabbath. The Sabbath is meant to be a day of joy, not penance. Did Jesus not rest and rejoice on the Sabbath since this is the major activity required, more so than prayer? Those Pharisees who accused Jesus of violating the Sabbath, did they not know He did not, but were testing His understanding of the Sabbath requirements?

He and the Apostles picked the heads of grain and ate them. He referenced King David. Yes, he healed, but he also commanded the healed to take up their mat and walk - probably more than a Sabbath day’s walk. He was constantly called to account for His activities on the Sabbath.

He is not a Catholic. We have differences certainly with their church.

Bible only Christians would argue only on the Bible.
