I don’t know where to ask this, but I’ve wondered: any time I have seen a depiction of the Virgin Mary, she is usually depicted in a blue dress. Why is that?
I thought that virginity was represented by the color white?Because blue represents virginity.

no, white represents pure, innocence or something new. Blue is the color of virginity (actually is light blue) so that is why the virgin Mary wear a blue veil instead of white.I thought that virginity was represented by the color white?
I hate to contradict you, but white represents purity and innocence. Purity and innocence is often associated with virginity. Blue represents royalty and heavenly grace.no, white represents pure, innocence or something new. Yes white represents purity and innocence, but light blue specifically means this woman is a virgin. It comes from old.Jewish traditions, as someone else mentioned back in the day young Jewish girls to get married wore blue as a way to say exactly I am virgin. Let’s say that light blue is more specific than white.I hate to contradict you, but white represents purity and innocence. Purity and innocence is often associated with virginity. Blue represents royalty and heavenly grace.

Pink was for boys actually, because Red was the color for men. Pink being a lighter (or weaker) version of Red, it stood to reason to use it for boys, being smaller/weaker versions of men. Many years ago, before blue for boys and pink for girls, blue was the color for girls. I assumed it was because blue was Mary’s color. Don’t remember what the color for boys was.
Of course, you are right. Some icons use blue for divinity and red for humanity, but many (if not most) icons reverse it, with RED representing divinity and blue representing humanity. Look at the two icons below of Jesus and the Virgin Mary:

Notice how the color of their garments is reversed. Mary has an inner garment of blue, representing her humanity. She is a regular person. However, because she has obeyed the will of God, she has received the reward of heaven, and is now cloaked in divinity, represented by the red. Though she is in heaven, she is but a normal human underneath.
Now look at Jesus. His inner garment is red, representing that he is DIVINE. He is FROM heaven. However, he has a cloak of blue around him, showing that he has come to dwell in the realm of humanity. Though he is with us in our world, he is not of our world.
