Why is there a difference between the God of the Old Testament and the New?

In our belief, the God of Jesus is also the God of Israel (i.e, the God of the OT and the God of the NT is one and the same God). We sometimes hear in the OT of the God of punishment (killing the first born sons of the Egyptians recorded in the book of Exodus for instance). But the same God in the NT appears to be loving and compasionate. Why is there this difference? Can we say that revelation in the OT is imperfect and that of the NT is perfect?
